Highly theoretical and inaccessible

This book was assigned reading for a children's literature course. It is extremely dense, highly theoretical, and somewhat inaccessible. Unless fairy tales are your life and love, this is not your book. I don't know what the previous reviewer was thinking, but there is no 10 year old I know who would EVER be able to comprehend or indeed care about what Zipes argues in this book. This book would be excellent reading for a Fairy Tales Ph.D. candidate. (BTW, I am a college graduate in English and teacher of English for 13 years, so it's not that I am a disinterested or incapable reader).

Why fairy tales stick is a fascinating question that -- properly probed -- explains much about human cognition.

Unfortunately, and this is despite his vast volume of work in the studying fairy tales themselves, Zipes largely fails in his mission because of his unwillingness to access other areas of study to unlock the fairy mystery.

It turns out that science and evolutionary psychology have been brought to bear in helping solve this problem. And what they tell is is that there are many contributing factors to why fairy tales stick with people and why they tend to mythically ideate.

One factor is superstition. By reading the works of Stuart Vyse, one can find that superstition is invoked where logical explanations are wanting. For example, at the betting table most people tend to make various pleas to lady luck or their favorite diety.

Another factor sort of follows naturally from the first. Once a superstition has been personified it becomes an easy step to attribute to that superstition a "theory of mind." In other words, just as we speculate on the motives of those we know, we attribute motives to our illusionary personified force and act in ways to placate those motives.

According to Pascal Boyer, who has studied why people religiously ideate, a religious component can be added when our personified force is attributed omniscience and omnipotence.

Or alternatively, if dinuted of omniscience or omnipotence, our personified force can merely be something unique...like a cat that can turn invisible or a person who survives death. In each case, the characters are memorable because they defy our usual expectations of cat and human behavior.

To the extent that fairy tales often involve these characters we have a partial explanation for why they "stick."

However, they are also memorable for the situations they create. Like watching a good movie can take one to another place and time and tease out expectations of human relations, they same occurs in fairy tales. Far from being a mere diversion these case studies give us the vital opportunity to imagine what would happen if we were to be in the same situation. In other words, we do not need to actually go there to know what being there is like.

But honestly, the story is still being filled in and thanks to psychologists like Steven Pinker and V.S. Ramashandran we are still learning much about the fascinating ways our minds cognate and why not only fairy tales but other things stick as well.

So in short, you can read this book but your time would probably be better spent reading the other authors mentioned in this review.

Truly Amazing

Never have I read a book that so succinctly defined and chronicled the evolution of and relationship between rationality and literacy. Not only does this book define rationality in a historical perspective, it engenders the inseparability of written, spoken and reasoned words. I can't honestly do it justice but I do know that it's worth reading. That is, if you can stomach defining rationality in terms of simple characters and their organization on a page, or lack thereof. Only wish I could afford to buy it instead of repeatedly renting it from the local library!

Further, Applebaum contends that technophobic literature disempowers its young readers by implying that the technologies of the future are inherently dangerous, while it neglects to acknowledge children’s complex, yet pleasurable, interactions with technology today. The study looks at works by well-known authors including M.T. Anderson, Monica Hughes, Lois Lowry, Garth Nix, and Philip Reeve, and explores topics such as ecology, cloning, the impact of technology on narrative structure, and the adult-child hierarchy. While focusing on the popular genre of science fiction as a useful case study, Applebaum demonstrates that negative attitudes toward technology exist within children’s literature in general, making the book of considerable interest to scholars of both science fiction and children’s literature.

An excellent, accessible study of young adult SF!

In an accessible, easy-to-read style, Applebaum argues that an anti-technological bias exists within contemporary young adult science fiction. Such technophobic literature, she explains, can disempower young readers and strengthen adult power and authority by suggesting that the technologies of the future are by their very nature negative forces, while neglecting to appreciate young peoples' often positive interactions with technology today (which tend to be more sophisticated than their adult counterparts'). Applebaum does a great job of putting this phenomenon in a larger cultural and sociological context in terms of popular -- and generation-specific -- understandings of childhood, innocence, technology, and the future. She backs up her compelling argument with very detailed case studies of a number of contemporary science fiction novels for young adult audiences. This in-depth study is important, thought-provoking, even troubling (in a useful way) reading for anyone who cares about the genre of science fiction and/or the literature and status of young adult readers. It also marks a significant contribution to scholarship on young adult science fiction, especially young adult dystopian fiction. Highly recommended!

Ivory Tower Professor writes book about media criticism

This book about media criticism is written by long time broadcasting professor Peter Orlik. He has taught at CMU more than 40 years - a true feat of longevity. However, Dr. Orlik has little if any relevent broadcasting experience other than the student stations at CMU. Orlik lacks diversity in broadcasting and approaches his topic almost totally from an academic perspective.

As the other writer noted, conciseness is not his forte. This is required text in CMU broadcasting classes, but of little interest outside this University.

This textbook is really hard to read. By hard I don't mean advanced, just boring and repetitive.
I have to read it for a graduate class, and although the class is very interesting, this book is brutal.
Maybe for someone who closely or professionally analyzes the media it would be appropriate, but for anyone else it is not.
I am not a media expert, but after reading a chapter I feel like it all could have been said in less than two pages.

That being said, the seller was great and shipping was really fast!

About the Author
A psychoanalyst and traumatologist who specializes in the treatment of dissociative disorders, Elizabeth Howell, Ph.D., is Associate Editor of the Journal of Trauma and Dissociation and Co-Director of the Dissociative Disorders Psychotherapy Training Program of the International Society for the Study of Dissociation.  Dr. Howell is a faculty member of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies Trauma Studies Program and an adjunct associate professor in the psychology department of New York University.  She has written and lectured widely on various aspects of trauma and dissociation. The author of The Dissociative Mind (Analytic Press, 2005), she has been awarded the Print Media Award for her work.

This book is the best I have read on the subject of dissociative identity disorder and other dissociative states. It is a brilliant summary of the history of understanding of the subject plus contains the author's original ideas on diagnostic categories and treatment as well as fruitful examples from her work. She clearly has a lot of respect for her clients' traumatic experiences and courage as well as a keen intellectual mind.

This books is not an easy light read but it is clear and very readable for someone at all versed in the subject or ready to become so.

It is a great addition to the work Howell previosly did in the history of the concept of dissociation and trauma as a way of understanding both conditions of injury and a general concept of how the mind works. As an earlier reviewer here noted we are not born unitary and then break apart, everyone faces the task of creating a workable semblance of wholeness. Some have it easier than others based on life experiences.

I also strongly recommend Howell's earlier book The Dissociative Mind. Nearly every paragraph in both books are gems that can be examined with many intriguing facets to explore.

I tried to read this book and was stumped lol. It really is for clinicians and not the normal reader. Make sure you have a dictionary for clinicians if you choose to tackle this book. Although the history of D.I.D. was very interesting and the experiences of patients within was enlightening.

Excellent for both clinicians and clients

This book is written clearly and the information is beneficial for both clinicians and clients alike. The topic has been well-researched, both historically and practically speaking. I have read information about DID here that I have yet to find in other sources. Howell knows this disorder inside and out and it shows. She references the top names in the field of dissociation and points to other articles and books worth reading for anyone who wishes to review more literature on DID and the spectrum of traumatology from both the physiological and psychological perspectives. I highly recommend this book to those who want to broaden their knowledge base about the immediate and long term effects of trauma, and better understand trauma survivors and ways to help them, specifically in the case of severe trauma survivors who present with DID.
