About the Author

Matthew S. McGlone (PhD Princeton University) is Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. He has published scholarly articles on euphemism, doublespeak, and contextomy. He has taught courses on persuasion, propaganda, and psychological warfare.

Mark L. Knapp (PhD Pennsylvania State University) is the Jesse H. Jones Centennial Professor Emeritus in Communication and Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Knapp has published several scholarly articles in the area of lying and deception, and he has directed several dissertations on the topic. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in lying and deception, and is writing a book in the area as well.

A classic worth hunting for

I hate to say how good this book is, because it is out of print.
My girls grew up on it, and I badly needed a copy for a four year old grandson who has a naughty little sister, and her twin brother. The pictures are wonderful. Kids get used to the British terminology, and although the marvelous Shirley Hughes pictures might depict children's clothes that are dated, the little kid faces and reactions, and the stories are not! Wish the publisher would re print.

Excellent introduction to philosophy through film

In the last decade or so a number of philosophers have become interested in film, both as a way of illustrating difficult concepts in philosophy and as a medium with a rich potential for the development of philosophical thought. Mary Litch's "Philosophy through Film" was one of the first and remains one of the best and most useful textbooks for introducing students to philosophical concepts by way of film, and uses ideas drawn from philosophy to help analyze films that raise important questions about the nature of human identity, the character of knowledge, and ethical and existential questions about how we live. The format is especially helpful. Each chapter introduces a central philosophical theme and raises several of the issues that surround this theme, and then illustrates the theme with a brief account of two or three contemporary and easily accessible films that raise issues related to this theme. The final part of the chapter presumes that students will have gone on to view the film for the first time, or once again with the specific thematic issues of the chapter in mind. She then gives a detailed summary of each film to suggest how the film raises and resolves such issues and examines what is at stake in the way the film seems to resolve this issue. So, for example, a chapter on personal identity -- the question what makes a person who he or she is -- is complemented by analyses of the films Being John Malkovich and Memento. A chapter on epistemology -- the question how we know what we know and whether we can have knowledge at all -- is complemented by analyses of "Total Recall" and "The Matrix." Overall, it is a fine book that is well written and clear -- and while I may disagree with some of her emphases and wish she had discussed certain subjects more or less, the overall presentation is compelling and interesting. Something she doesn't do, but that other philosophers have begun to do in a number of books, is raise questions about the nature of film itself and whether and to what extent it is a medium uniquely suited for the expression or exploration of philosophical ideas. Even more, whether film itself might be said to be a medium for philosophy and not merely a useful illustration of philosophical concepts. I use this as a text in my course entitled Film and Philosophy to introduce students to the methods of philosophy, and especially to make relevant some of the seemingly abstract debates that take place within ethics, epistemology and metaphysics. I supplement this with discussions and readings in aesthetics to raise the question what is distinctive to film as a medium, and to raise questions that go beyond film as an illustration of philosophy and in the direction of the "philosophy of film." I'd love to see Mary Litch come out with a new edition of this excellent text, and expect to keep using it for some time.

UPDATE: a new edition of Philosophy through Film has been published, including discussions of more films and additional topics, as well as a brief but valuable introduction to issues surrounding the "philosophy of film."

A very informative book

I bought this book for my philosophy class at college. I had neither interest nor knowledge about philosophy prior to this class. But the book made it easy for me to enter philosophical world, it was not that boring as I thought. Overall a good book for beginner of philosophy, very throughly explained and informative.

About the Author

Robert W. Keidel is Clinical Professor of Management at the LeBow College of Business, Drexel University. He also is principal of Robert Keidel Associates, a consulting firm based in Philadelphia. A former corporate manager and Naval officer (Vietnam veteran), he was a senior fellow at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and a program consultant at the National Center for Productivity and Quality of Working Life.

Keidel’s articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Management Science, and several other academic and practitioner-oriented journals. He is the author of three previous books: Game Plans: Sports Strategies for Business (Dutton, 1985; Berkley, 1986; Beard Books, 2006); Corporate Players: Designs for Working and Winning Together (Wiley, 1988; Beard Books, 2005); and Seeing Organizational Patterns: A New Theory and Language of Organizational Design (Berrett-Koehler, 1995; Beard Books, 2005), which was nominated for the Academy of Management’s 1996 George R. Terry Book Award.

Keidel received his BA from Williams College, and his MBA and PhD (Social Systems Sciences) from Wharton.

An actiobable approach to changing your thinking, better in hard copy but not at a premium price.

Strategy a complex and confusing area of business for the simple reason that strategy requires answering difficult questions for which there are no clear and simple answers. A lack of clear and consistent tools has created a whole strategic industrial complex as there are as many ways to do a strategy as there are stars in the sky - until now.

Robert Keidel's The Geometry of Strategy offers a simple, intuitive and powerful set of strategy tools that any one can use. Based on his personal experience as an executive, consultant and business school professor, Keidel has broken down the strategy process into its essential cognitive elements and then equated them with simple geometric shapes.

- Point thinking - its either black or white
- Linear thinking - an issue exists as choices on a spectrum
- Angular thinking - an issue is black or white - both/and
- Triangular thinking - an issue as a blend of autonomy, control and cooperation

The book focused on how to apply these different `geo-mental' (my word) models to various strategic issues and decisions. The book is organized by the different ways of thinking rather than exploring how that thinking could produce different results for the same issue.

Overall a good book for a student of strategy, helpful for executives who have the time to think through these issues - that should be everyone, but often its not. If you have the time to think, and the desire to think differently and you purchase the book in hard copy, then the Geometry of Strategy is worth the investment of your time and attention.

NOTE: This book is a good investment at $15 - 25 for the hard copy, similar to the e book price. When I checked the hardcopy price on amazon was over $100, a level at which I cannot recommend the book, even though I did not get as much value from reading the eBook as I would have from having it in hard copy.

Strengths

The completeness of Keidel's treatment of the issues related to strategy and organizational definition.

The examples used to illustrate the tools and the different ways of thinking.

The illustrations that make it easy for you to see how your situation could be represented in these geometries.

Challenges

The book is conceptual in nature so its about how you think about these issues rather than address specific points like technology, HR, etc. That is not bad as you need to think clearly to make good decisions, but for people looking for a recipe at the functional level will not find it here.

This is not a good e-Book. Much of the book's value rests in its illustrations on how to use the different geometry's. Because of this I would recommend purchasing the book in hardcopy rather than electronically. I purchased a Kindle version and found myself recopying the diagrams into a notebook so I could think and annotate them better.

The writing style is rather academic and heavy requiring your concentration to work though and digest. This is another reason for not purchasing this as an eBook that one tends to read/skim more than study.

The book concentrates on Keidel's ideas and points without putting them into the broader context of what the reader may already know. I get the impression hat the book assumes that there is only one way to do strategy, which limits your ability to bring the reader's experience into play.

An inspiration in managment and organizational thinking

Robert W Keidel is a brilliant thinker who deserves far more visibility than he has in the global management arena. His latest book is an inspiration and a great, much expected (for me) follow up to `Seeing organizational patterns', a source of stimulation I return to often in my work as a consultant, author and speaker. I wish we could make Keidel's work compulsory to anybody with organizational/management responsibilities. For one tenth of Keidel's ideas others have created guru empires with little new ideas but a lot of noise. Thanks Robert.

I found this book reads fast. It's not a simple read, but it's organized well and has a number of useful concepts. Unlike some other books, I can see how the information correlates with my professional career. I was renting it, but went ahead and bought it because I might want to refer back to the information at a later date.

About the Author

Hank J. Brightman is Associate Research Professor in the War Gaming Department of the United States Naval War College. He served as an Associate Professor and Chair of the Criminal Justice Department at Saint Peter’s College from 2000-2008. He also spent 15 years in a variety of law enforcement, investigative, and intelligence analysis positions with the U.S. Department of the Interior, the United States Secret Service and the United States Navy.

Today's White-Collar Crime: Legal, Investigative, and Theoretical Perspectives (Criminology and Justice Studies)

Although I bought this book on another website, it is a bit cheaper on Amazon.com. I am not a criminal justice major, and have not taken any courses in this area, but I found this book very, very interesting! It provided me with a thorough understanding of white-collar crime. I liked the author's use of activities at the end of each chapter, and it made difficult concepts easy to understand. I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested knowing more about white-collar crime or government corruption.

Kids' Club Letters provides an innovative approach to group psychotherapy for school-aged children who experience a range of social and emotional problems. A narrative therapy approach is adapted, taking the form of letters written by the therapist in the voice of a child who is asking for advice about interpersonal or emotional problems. The child in the letter is asking for guidance from the participants in the group. These letters were devised and written for the purpose of structuring responses in group psychotherapy, allowing the participants to address relevant issues for them individually and at the group level. The children in the groups had previously experienced difficulty discussing these issues spontaneously. Hence the 'Dear Group' letter format was born. The children did not know that the therapist had written the letters.

Georgia DeGangi, PhD, OTR, FAOTA, is a clinical psychologist and an occupational therapist in private practice at ITS (Integrated Therapy Services) for Children and Families, Inc., in Kensington, MD. She is the co-author of Effective Parenting for the Hard-to-Manage Child and has over 25 years of experience working with infants, children, and their families.

Marc Nemiroff, PhD, is co-chair of the Infant/Young Child Mental Health Training Program at the Washington School of Psychiatry in Washington, D.C. In his private practice, he specializes in the treatment of pre-school and early elementary grade children.

Excellent book for any therapist doing groups with kids or teens

This is a great book for therapists working in group with children or teens, especially those with developmental or social disabilities. The authors use actual group transcripts and comment on the group process. Is also just an interesting read. I highly recommend it.

No Pain here

I only read American history books once or twice a year, so for me to even be attracted to this one is a real measure of its genius. Completely erudite, author Vickers has created nothing short of a masterpiece of contemporary historical research. Never have Paine and Common Sense been dealt with, well, frankly with such common sense. The subject matter emerges here in full color and in its full import. You want a revolution, better get yourself a Tom Paine. Want a brilliant read, one filled with outstanding research and profound insight, find yourself a Vikki Vickers monograph and prepare to learn on a massive, unrelenting scale. You might need an extra brain.
