Textbook for Class

The sources for the textbook are interesting. The people and sources chosen are those whom may never have been represented in lectures about the American Revolution. While there are materials from famous official documents and people, it has been intriguing to read from the perspective of Native Americans, African-Americans, and women about the American Revolution. The other nice item about the book is that it includes images from the Revolution as part of its sources. However, some of the sources are a little difficult to understand as the time-period language is different.

A great textbook

The book covers most philosophical approaches with a political perspective. I truly enjoyed it and it is a pretty easy read. Graham could have included feminism, Marxism, and many other philosophies but I guess he had to choose a select few.

Outstanding Overview of World Music

This textbook takes a travel approach to learning more about music from around the world. This helps you relate the music to the various lands and you really get a sense of how neighboring regions' music can affect each other.

The writing style is very readable and never comes across as "stuffy." I purchased this textbook because it was required for a college masters class and I truly enjoyed the reading assignments. So often textbooks at that level get so bogged down in terminology and "academic speak" that they are a chore to read. While there is plenty of terminology with this subject, the authors take time in the first 3 chapters to set you up for the journey. This includes explaining their philosophy and terminology used throughout the book. Major terms from the text are also defined in the margins next to where they were introduced which makes studying for tests and researching for papers and projects much easier.

Accompanying the text are 2 CDs (included) and generous amounts of photographs that allow you to hear and see the cultures as you study them. There is also a website for the book which includes even more supplemental materials. The book is broken into "sites" and as you "arrive" at each site you are introduced to the history, geography and native culture. You then dive in to one or more styles of music native to that region. Since music is a reflection of its culture, you can really understand the cultural basis of the music with this approach.

The book is designed to be an introduction to world music and not an exhaustive text on any one culture. That being said, I still came away with what I felt was a thorough primer of music from other lands. There is a lot of material in this textbook and it is a worthwhile read. While clearly a college text, I believe it would work well for a high school class in the hands of an enthusiastic instructor.

A Read-able Textbook

I purchased this book to prepare for the ethnomusicology portion of a university entrance exam. The text is interesting and appropriate for an audience familiar with the basic fundamentals of music (explained in the first chapter). The audio examples (on two accompanying CDs) are explained in the text as well, helpful for aurally understanding material presented in each chapter. I was able to read "World Music" from cover to cover in two months (slow summertime reading) and successfully pass my exam (mostly because the listening examples in the book were well explained - my ears were prepared). The book isn't exhaustive, of course, but it doesn't claim to be. Overall, a good introductory textbook I would use in my classroom.

Very useful launching pad for further research

I've used this book and accompanying CD's for the past few years as the basis of the world music aspect of the IB (International Baccalaureate) programme. My students have noted that they've found this text book easy to read and comprehend. Not all world musics are reviewed. However, it gives enough of a basis to allow the students to use the framework model noted within the book for further individual research within other musical contexts.

Certainly worth it if you have nothing else near you! Used in conjunction with the Schott World Sound Matters materials, the world music part of IB is sorted! World Sound Matters: An Anthology of Music from Around the World (Schott)

Excellent information, personable, well written. One BIG problem

I couldn't wait for the release of this book, particularly the kindle version. As far as information, content, and the writing - this book is a huge win and represents the first comprehensive text for Educational Therapy.

That said, there's a huge flaw that makes reading it on kindle nearly impossible. The book was NOT formatted for kindle. I run into this a lot. It seems authors may not realize the work that goes into formatting a manuscript for kindle or ebook publication, and fail to ensure that the digital book editor does his or her job. I do mean a lot - nearly 80% of the books I read on kindle share this fate. However, this book is hands down the worst I've ever encountered. Entire phrases run together without spacing between the words. The book is not searchable as it should be for kindle, the table of contents has so many errors it is nearly rendered useless, and tables / images were not formatted for the kindle. Making it worse, none of the content can be printed, yet this is a professional development or educational textbook. If the reader cannot accurately view tables and images on screen, he / she should at least be able to print it off for reference.

I sincerely hope the authors acknowledge the issue and contact their publishing company to have the problems rectified. More importantly, I hope they offer a free upgrade to all customers who've purchased the digital book to date. As I said at the outset, the writing and information are nothing less than brilliant - if only the book were readable I'd give it five stars.

Book Reflects Growing Recognition of Educational Therapy

This book has accomplished the task of conceptualizing the unique and specialized world of educational therapy. As an educational therapist, I am proud to be part of this growing field where knowledge of learning disabilities in their myriad manifestations, sensitivity to the socio-emotional influences on learning, consideration of the learner's curriculum or job expectations, and skills for assessment, intervention, and collaboration all converge on a treatment plan that promotes the outcome of a motivated, strategic, and competent learner.

Ficksman and Adelizzi have captured the essence of educational therapy out of a large body of writings relative to the concepts of this multidimensional profession. Readers will appreciate that educational therapy goes far beyond what many people think of as tutoring. The learner in all his complexity (cognitive, neurobiological, social, emotional, and cultural) is respected and guided toward his learning goals within the safety of a trusting one on one therapeutic alliance. For professionals who strive to become educational therapists, this book equips them with the skills to address the learning needs of adults in college or the workplace, as well as school-age children. Chapters teach the importance of working with families, dealing with the emotional complications of learning, and developing the therapeutic relationship that supports growth and self-understanding. They also cultivate more astute observation and interpretation of assessment data to help parents and teachers better understand the learner's behaviors at home and in the classroom, and what they can do to accommodate learning.

Learning is more than academics

This book reminds me of several important themes in helping individuals learn: One is the concept of alliance (among aspects of learning as well as among key people). Another is the impact of long-term emotions, indeed often trauma, on those who have struggled with learning disabilities, ADHD, etc. - so easy for professionals to forget and so relevant. A third is the historical trajectory from the ET field's roots into a future where educational therapy can be the norm. Important nuts and bolts are included, too, and rendered real via case studies. Inspiring and thought-provoking for all whose work intersects - and that includes many of us in the helping/education professions. We are reminded that learning is indeed more than academics.

An esential book to the Zolt/Rimstalker universe

While this book was much more limited in its scope than the other book in the series (The Last Legend Of Earth), it managed a successful charm of its own.
By showing one human's treck into the Werld (the time/space bubble at the rim of the universal blackhole) and the Zolt and Rimstalkers in their own domain it manages to help flesh out the much larger story, Last Legends of Earth. I will admit, this is a short one and might not be to as many people's liking. HOWEVER, this book adds so much to the later struggle through its little details, while its story is still very good, that it is instantly a must have to fans of Attanasio's sci-fi work. The 5 space minds (the eld skyles) also help to show that no matter how powerful the beings, there is always something else more powerful (a very nice counter balance to the Zolt and the Rimstalkers in Last Legends of Earth).
This book lacks some of the literary flow of the later books, and some of the details are less fleshed out, making this more a testing of ideas for the later books, versus an actual first book in itslef. But don't be deceived, even it you NEVER read and of the author's great books, this is a book unto itself. The light lanced armor is a nice peace of technological creation. Very much a imaginative work in its own right. When the combat takes place with Space/time weapons, and gravity waves, with everything being protected by a different artificial space time distortion the size of a quarter, well just read the book and appreciate the more simplistic tale that still has all of the great elements of his later much more complex works.
A nice book to build you up to his grand masterpiece, the Last Legends of Earth.

Good, but could be better

This was my first Attanasio novel, one I discovered by accident, when working at a bookstore 14 years ago. It was Attanasio's second novel, after _Radix_, and clearly not his best work.
The story is about Carl Schirmer, a nerdish accountant transported into a world of floating islands and strange creatures, located in a bubble inside a black hole. A living island with powers over space-time gives Carl a new improved body in return for doing various life-saving tasks. It is in this book that Attanasio introduces the villainous Zotl, perhaps the most evil alien beings in all of SF, and their enemies, the mysterious Rimstalkers. Both species return for a final showdown, in _The Last Legends of Earth_.
_In Other Worlds_ is fast-paced and enjoyable. While not of the same calibre as _Radix_ and _The Last Legends of Earth_, it is far easier to read. Most readers would also find it easier to identify with the hero, and other characters, of this novel than those of _Radix_. However, Attanasio crams too many elements, too many gadgets, into the plot, and that detracts from the main story of Carl, his quest, and his love interest(s).
Though an excellent fantasy writer, and imaginative as hell, Attanasio has trouble with the science in science-fiction. That could explain why he switched to fantasy later on. The science in _In Other Worlds_ is no better than that of Star Trek, sad to say.

Future times and multiple dimensions

This novel takes place in both contemporary times as well as in the distant future of the universe. As he does in "Arc of the Dream" and "Last Legends of Earth", Attanasio considers the possibility of other dimensions and those who dwell in them. Every Attanasio novel I've encountered has been excellent, however his earlier novels, those comprising the Radix Tetrad, go farthest in stretching readers' philosophical horizons.

Physics has come a distance since this novel was written, but not so far that it can definitively prove, or disprove, extra dimensions, their landscape, or the nature of the beings who occupy them. Although today fewer scientists believe that the universe will eventually collapse, Attanasio's work remains relevant in other particulars. This novel, as well as the other volumes in the Radix Tetrad, are destined to be science fiction classics.

About the Author
Mark J. Blechner, Ph.D., is a psychologist and psychoanalyst in New York City. Along with 50 articles and book chapters, he has published three books - Hope and Mortality (Analytic Press, 1997), The Dream Frontier (Analytic Press, 2001), and Sex Changes: Transformations in Society and Psychoanalysis (Routledge, 2009) - and is the editor-in-chief of the journal Contemporary Psychoanalysis. He is a training and supervising psychoanalyst at William Alanson White Institute, where as founder and director of its HIV Clinical Service from 1991 until 2001, he led the first psychoanalytic clinic devoted to working with people with AIDS, their relatives, and caregivers. He has taught at Columbia University, Yale University, and New York University.
