About the Author

Theodore A. Avtgis (Ph.D., Kent State University) is Associate Professor of Communication at West Virginia University. He has co-authored four books, including Argumentative and Aggressive Communication with Andrew S. Rancer. He serves on the editorial boards of Argument and Advocacy, Communication Research Reports, Human Communication, and Journal of Intercultural Communication Research, among others. Among several awards, he was recognized as one of the Top Twelve Most Productive Researchers in the field of Communication Studies (between 1996 and 2001) and as a member of the World Council on Hellenes Abroad, USA Region of American Academics.

Andrew S. Rancer (Ph.D., Kent State University) is Professor of Communication at the University of Akron. He has published articles in Communication Monographs, Human Communication Research, Communication Education, Communication Quarterly, and Communication Research Reports, among others. He is co-author of four books, and he has served as editor of Communication Research Reports and the Massachusetts Communication Journal. Among several honors, he is the recipient of the Eastern Communication Association’s Past Presidents/Officers Award (1989) and Distinguished Research Fellow Award (1997) and was a member of ECA’s Committee of Scholars (1989-90).

An insightful treatment of an important topic

"Rediscovering Confession: The Practice of Forgiveness and Where it Leads" seeks no less than to bridge the divides between psychology and theology, sin and illness, orthodoxy and the new spirituality, and "believer" and "seeker," to name a few. This is a tall order, but author David A. Steere, Ph.D., remains undaunted as he examines the archetypal experience of confession much as a lapidary would a precious stone: by exposing to the light, one by one, the many facets of its structure. His analysis focuses on the autobiographical speaking and writing from our deepest selves that moves us out of alienation and towards an experience of faith, however we may define that term. Steere, a practicing psychotherapist, Professor Emeritus of Pastoral Care and Counseling at the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and a former parish minister, is uniquely suited to this task, as his distinguished career has spanned both the worlds of psychotherapy and theology.

I found Steere's analysis to be both expanding and grounding. It leads the reader on a wide-ranging historical, theological, and psychological journey, and embraces such topics as orthodoxy, heresy, sin and "the fall of Adam," Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism, Islam, Jung's collective unconscious, psychology during the 1960's, the Enneagram, systems theory, and the "sacred feminine," to name a few. I particularly welcomed the chapter on "The Trouble with Adam," since I have always had difficulty understanding the theology behind sin. Steere's explanation of the historical development of the concept of sin, how that concept relates to the psychological conditions of guilt and shame, and how authentic confession of that which we are ashamed enables both psychological and spiritual transformation, will enlighten both seekers and believers.

Confession and its place in both religious orthodoxy and daily life is one of those great human themes, as demonstrated by such fictional works as "Crime and Punishment" (Dostoevsky), "Brideshead Revisited" (Waugh), and "Sophie's Choice" (Styron). Whether we admit it or not, we are all concerned with the struggles of conscience addressed by the world's great religions. To be less makes us, at best, as Joseph Campbell so aptly put it, a passive audience for "the news of the day," and at worst, authors of our own destruction. But confession that is not grounded in the authentic self does not heal, but merely contributes to the noise in the marketplace.

"Rediscovering Confession" is grounded in the authentic self. Steere defines his audience as "the people with whom I work," which includes persons from all walks of life, whether they are believers or the "spiritually homeless." He calls for more and deeper confession--and forgiveness--in our private and public lives. The message of this book is compassionate as well as ambitious: it encourages us to become and to remain deeply authentic with ourselves and each other. "Rediscovering Confession" is a book to be savored on the journey towards a deeper understanding of what it means to walk in the world with honesty, authenticity, and joy.

Very Little Content, Very Fluffy Writing

I'm so disappointed in this book. Overall, it's like a bad teenage research paper. There's about 5 pages of content stretched into 138 pages of fluff. Admittedly, it has a narrow focus, but the author spends endlesss paragraphs talking about the weather and 'Rock-N-Roll lightning' striking instead of actually giving us insight into the people involved.

The author claims to have interviewed dozens of persons there that day but confines his narrative primarily to imagining how Paul and John felt. It would have been much better to just relate different persons observations about what they saw and remembered that day with a bit of narrative in between.

A representative example of the fluff throughout this book from page 102, "Like a dexterous pickpocket, a passing cloud steals the sun from the long gray vest of the sky. The cloud edge is black frosted. The shadows of the Liverpool field become more ill defined. It's a summer evening of deepening dampness. The humidity hangs in a dim blue haze. A sudden breeze whispers a warning of whimsical weather."

It was taken on July 6th, 1957, and shows John Lennon and his original group, the Quarrymen, performing at the St. Peter's Parish Church Garden Fete. Among those watching the performance was a young man who would be introduced to Lennon later that day. It was one of those meetings that changed history, because that young man was Paul McCartney.
For all that's been written about the Beatles, it's amazing how much of their history has been obscured. The year of the Lennon-McCartney meeting has been variously published as 1955 and 1956, in addition to the correct 1957. In this volume, O'Donnell gets the year right--and a lot more. I own too many books about the Beatles for my own good, and this book is in my top 5 favorites. Why? It is a very unusual Beatle-related book. This book took years to research and it pays off. I felt like I had relived the day that they actually met. It is just fascinating to read as the hours count down to the very moment that the two meet at the fete.
Please remember: This book is just about one small slice of Beatle lore.

James Elkins is E.C. Chadbourne Chair in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His many books include Pictures and Tears, How to Use Your Eyes, and What Painting Is, all published by Routledge.

Michael Newman teaches in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is Professor of Art Writing at Goldsmiths College in the University of London. A dense but critical discussion about criticism

I'll confess, the essays in "The State of Art Criticism" enraged me, enthralled me and put a knot in my stomach, in turns. It's an important discussion about critical theory that falls unnecessarily under the weight of its own language and ideas at times. The second paragraph of the preface is filled with references to philosophers, historians and critics mentioned by last name only. This might be fine for Freud or even Lacan and Derrida, but Klossowski, Lecercle? This speaks volumes about where this book is coming from and who is -- and is not -- included in the dialogue. This is particularly poignant when the book is essentially about the increasing ubiquity of criticism and the utter lack of readership for it. The best of the book was Elkins' own essay, which has been around in other forms for some years now. Michael Schreyach's essay used precise language like a crutch and was at times maddeningly convoluted and unclear. Dave Hickey's thoughts on October were precious, however. In the end, it's worth plowing through for those truly interested in and close to the subject at hand.

The best you can get if you want to know how so much amazing music operates. I had Dr. Green for counterpoint at UT: One thing he taught us was to never let mechanics and technique overshadow beauty. By understanding how something is constructed we get a deeper sense of the awe and mysery. I could go on but I'll spare you! Great author-great book.

Good textbook but needs new edition

Carroll's text was required for my graduate work in professional writing. The book is well-written and features intuitive organization of applicable topics. It is rather outdated, however, and should be supplemented with other resources, particularly in regards to mobile design and current marketing strategies. Indeed, some of the case studies and photos in this 2010 publication are almost irrelevant today. If a second edition were released, it would be the best of both worlds.

Decent Intro to Writing Online

I don't know who this other reviewer is, but something's wrong with him. This book is certainly starting to appear dated, but the basic info is a great introduction for understanding the principles of writing online. I teach college argumentation classes and provide sections of the book for guidance on a blog project they do. This has served well for that purpose.
