Balanced, thorough, informative and fun!

As other reviewers have said this incredible work by Sean Williams is a gem. As a text for college courses this book offers an impressive store of knowledge to the reader and more than perhaps anything else provides the proper context for discovering Irish music for the first time, or exploring it further.

From her historical framing of the subjects dealt with, to the examples of music provided and her treatment of both instrumental and vocal music, Williams does not miss a beat or hit a wrong note. Her section on the vocal tradition of sean-nos is particularly well executed and on its own would make this book worth reading.

Williams' examination of Irish Music is not only quite in-depth but also displays a balance in treatment that is rare. She is able to, seemingly effortlessly, navigate through the presentation of information without pontificating or biasing the reader. She is her self an accomplished traditional Irish musician, (a delightful sean-nos singer,) but is not shy in acknowledging that such things as Irish Punk music and Riverdance have a place at the table and are deserving of consideration. It is really a joy to see someone so steeped in "traditional" music give a fair shake to more "modern" expressions of Irish music and culture.

More than anything else, this book was enjoyable to read, and was more of a page-turner than one might expect from an academic text series. Most skilled instrumentalists will tell you that a masterwork instrument is so well crafted that it almost seems to play itself. This book is of that caliber, and is a accurate extension of the author's own expertise on the subject. Pick up Focus: Irish Traditional Music, open the first page, and let this book practically read itself.

Fantastic Resource

During my Irish studies, I took a year long program with the author-- using her book. It proved to be very insightful, easy to read, and thorough. It has been praised here and in Ireland as a success. The author's focus and intention is to clearly explain the progression of Irish music in an accessible way to enhance the reader's understanding of Irish cosmology. This is an educational textbook.

Engaging and Richly Informative

Sean Williams knows her stuff - and even better, she communicates her wealth of knowledge with an accessible and engaging writing style. She explains and illuminates the ins and outs of Irish music and culture without using dry, overly-scholarly language, making this a perfect book for *anyone* interested in knowing more about Irish Traditional Music.

This book is wonderfully layered, full of basic information, but also a deeper examination of the roots and branches of Irish music (including a nod to U2). Whether a seasoned session player or someone who knows almost nothing about the music, there's something for every reader to enjoy and discover. I'm a professional musician and teacher, and I was neither bored nor bemused while reading this book -- it works on so many levels.

The included CD, with annotations, is a great resource, as well as being chock full of fabulous traditional music.

Highly recommended for anyone who has ever listened to Danny Boy, tried to dance a jig, or worn green on St. Patrick's Day!

About the Author

Ronald D. Smith APR is a professor of public communication at Buffalo State College, the largest college within the State University of New York, where he teaches public relations planning, writing, and related topics to undergraduate and graduate students. Prior to his work as an educator, he spent 10 years as a public relations director and eight years as a newspaper reporter and editor. He is active as a consultant in public relations and strategic communication, assisting businesses and nonprofit organizations with planning, research, communication management and media training.

In addition to Strategic Planning for Public Relations, Smith also is the author of Becoming a Public Relations Writer (3rd edition 2008, Routledge) and co-author of MediaWriting (2nd edition 2009, Routledge) with W. Richard Whitaker and Janet E. Ramsey.

This was required reading for a professional certificate in public relations. I kept the book after the course ended because it is also a great reference book.

Straight Forward, Wonderfully Written, Great Resource

I really love the tone this book is written in. It's totally easy to understand and because of that, it's easy to learn from. It breaks down information in the written form and with the use of visuals. There are recaps and examples throughout all of the chapters as well. I'll be keeping this as a resource for years to come.

Professors, do not use this book for your college class

I used this book for a college class and learned absolutely nothing. This book gives you the basics of public relations, yes, but everyone knows the fundamentals before you even begin talking about them. This book could have sufficed with a few sections dedicated to the steps involved in public relations, but instead, the entire book just covers basics. It is also very repetitive, almost as if to hammer information into your brain. This wouldn't be a bad thing if said information wasn't pretty simple. Suggested rename for the book: "Obvious Planning for Public Relations"

On another hand, it is pretty easy reading.

She was awarded the prestigious Sylvia Rivera Award in Transgender Studies in 2006 (award by CUNY, US) for her work on transgender and feminist theory. About the Author

Joe R. Feagin is Ella C. McFadden Professor at Texas A & M University. Feagin has done research on racism and sexism issues for forty-five years and has served as the Scholar-in-Residence at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. He has written 54 scholarly books and nearly 200 scholarly articles in his research areas, and one of his books (Ghetto Revolts) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. His recent books include Systemic Racism (Routledge 2006) and Two Faced Racism: Whites in the Backstage and Frontstage (Routledge 2007). He is the 2006 recipient of a Harvard Alumni Association lifetime achievement award and was the 1999-2000 president of the American Sociological Association.

Don't listen to the other reviews - 3.5 Stars

As of today 7/16/2012 there are only two other reviews on this book other than my own. Although they are completely different in opinion they both equally outrageous.

What I think both reviews might not have caught was that the author was trying to say that whites were the first group to have an economic system grounded in race based slavery, not that white's were the only ones to hold slaves.

To the reviewer who said that racism is a white problem and not a colored problem you are correct. If you manage to conveniently forget about the ancient Egyptians, Pol Pot in Cambodia, and the relatively recent black on black genocide in Rwanda (all based on racism)just to name a few then you would be left with whites being the only racist group. Come on, what you wrote is nothing more than an emotionally charged rant.

To the reviewer who said it blames whites for everything I didn't think that at all. I think what the author had to say was legitimate. He calls out the systematic racism that really does exist. Before you start thinking I'm some white guy who feels guilty about slavery I'm not. I try to be as realistic as possible about everything and from what I have read and researched there is a system of racism (and I don't feel bad about slavery, I really don't even care that it happened).

Now, on the actual review, I'll make this quick.

I thought Feagin was good about pointing out stereotypes and institutional racism, but some of the chapters are really weak where it feel like he has a point to make and just has a hard time backing it up. He goes after conservatives early and often and sometimes seems to play the political game of "Well, if they like it then I don't". Some of his chapters rely to heavily on numbers and it's easy to get confused or mixed up.

Overall, I would recommend it for a college course, but most definitely not for leisurely reading

P.S. for anyone reading reviews I have learned that people who use the words "truth", "fair", and "facts" in their names are always by far the most biased individuals.

Even if you have no home buying or renting experience, the outrageous - but surprisingly believable - situations will make you laugh out loud! Home buyers, sellers, and renters will find the situations eerily familiar, in the most laughable way! `This Desirable Plot' covers everything: agent lingo, owner lingo, buyer tactics (`no, you can't swing a cat in here!'), horror stories of home inspection, and more! Of course all the jokes are told with stellar wording and drawing! The plot may not be as desirable as they'd like you to think, but this is certainly a very desirable book!

Golly, this is fun! The art style is rich and detailed, extremely realistic in the depictions of nature, strongly realistic in the architecture, and wittily believable in the caricatures of people. The trials and travails of home ownership are richly mocked, but always lightly and lovingly. You just can't help but feel deep togetherness with these charming people, going about the business of finding a place to live. House-hunting is a nightmare in real life; this book turns it into a delight. Still a nightmare, but you can laugh! Thelwell exemplifies the famous understated British sense of humor. You'll love him. "A home of immense character." I still laugh!

About the Author

LeeAnn Kahlor (Ph.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison) is an assistant professor in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations at the University of Texas at Austin where she teaches courses in public relations and science and health communication. She is affiliated with UT’s Center for Women’s and Gender Studies and the university’s Environmental Sciences Institute. Her work has appeared in Science Communication, Public Understanding of Science, Health Communication, Risk Analysis, Communication Research, Human Communication Research, Media Psychology and the Journal of Broadcast and Electronic Media.

Patricia A. Stout (Ph.D., University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) is Professor and John P. McGovern Regents Professor in Health and Medical Science Communication in the Department of Advertising at the University of Texas at Austin. She teaches courses in persuasive communication and health communication. Stout is former co-director of the Center for Health Promotion Research (CHPR) in the School of Nursing at UT Austin.

About the Author

Paul Badura-Skoda is one of the most important pianists of our time. In 1945, Badura-Skoda entered the Vienna entered the Vienna Conservatory, and two years later won first prize in the Austrian Music Competition and a scholarship which allowed him to study with Edwin Fischer. In 1949, Wilhelm Firtwängler and Herbert von Karajan became aware of Badura-Skoda's outstanding talent, and invited him to play concerts. Practically overnight the young Viennese became a world-famous artist. Since then, Badura-Skoda has been a regular and celebrated guest at the most important music festivals, and a soloist with world's most prestigious orchestras.

Eva Badura-Skoda is a musicologist, publishing extensively on the history of the piano and on performance-practice problems of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Opinion presented as fact - as is typical of writings from famous musicians

As with many out of print books a bout music and the piano I have not bought a printed version of this. INstead I have a downloaded eBook.

Badura Skoda seems to know Mozart's intention better than Mozart himself, as he presumes to tell us what Mozart intended when Mozart got his notation wrong! He tells us how many ambiguous elements of Mozart's notation are to be interpreted, but rarely tells us why, to the detriment of those of us that do not share his infallible insights. He also has intimate and accurate knowledge of 18th Century customs and conventions despite the fact that writers of that time contradict each other on almost every point!

My advice to pianists that want to play Mozart "authentically" and "meaningfully". Read this, and any other books from the arrogant superstars of the classical world. Then play the music as you see fit, based on what you take to be its meaning ... and NOT on the rules and pronouncements of self-professed experts, no matter how well or badly they play, nor how great their reputations.
