Arthur F. Kinney is Copeland Professor of Literary History at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Director of the Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies. He is the editor of "Renaissance Drama: An Anthology of Plays and Entertainments" (Blackwell, 1999"), A Companion to Renaissance Drama" (Blackwell, 2002) and of the journal "English Literary Renaissance." His other works include "Elizabethan Backgrounds" (Second Edition, 1994), "Rogues, Vagabonds and Sturdy Beggars" (Second Edition, 1995), "Humanist Poetics" (1986), and "Lies Like Truth: Shakespeare, Macbeth, and the Cultural Moment" (2001).

good intentions, but I'm disappointed

I was soooo excited when I saw this book in a bookstore one day. However, this is not a book by leading progressive activists on how to be a progressive brotha. It's a very academic anthology. I am blessed to have the education to understand it, but many others will not.

I didn't think the array of chapters was that strong. I love that it has chapters on fighting sexism. However, there is no stand-out chapter on fighting homophobia, a most embarrassing scourge of our Black communities. Like a lot of men's studies text, I am pleased that this book has male and female contributors, however. You can even says it's "anti-essentialist" as a white men's studies guru contributes a chapter.

There's a chapter that bashes "The Cosby Show" and "Martin." Its critique is that you never saw Heathcliff or Claire at their jobs. A) That's not true. Many times you saw Heathcliff with pregnant patients and one time Claire defended Denise in court. B) The show challenged sexism. Even Michael Dyson wrote about this. There's a chapter on prison masculinities. It details the myriad roles that prisoners play, but what's progressive about that? Prison roles are the utmost opposite of that which is progressive.

This book is an example of my eyes being bigger than my stomach. I wanted to love it, but I just couldn't.

Using critical theory in educational research

This is an excellent discussion of how to effectively use critical social theory in a dissertation or other research. Most of the book consists of thoughtful descriptions by 6 of Anyon's former doctoral students of how they used theory in their dissertation research; Anyon provides a valuable introductory chapter, and Michelle Fine's epilogue gives a useful commentary on the the 6 dissertation chapters. Two comments: 1) the book focuses almost exclusively on what's called critical social theory (Marxist, feminist, postmodern, critical race theory, and other "progressive" theories), although many of the points made are applicable to using theory in general. A book that provides a good discussion of using a broader range of theories is Mark Dressman, Using social theory in educational research: A practical guide. 2) I would have liked to see more critique of the theories used; this is something that Dressman's book devotes more attention to.

This collection is unfortunately a bit thin. Some of the articles are very smart and useful, but many are undertheorized and a bit simplistic. For the topic, this is a good start, but is most likely of more use to students at the undergraduate level, rather than graduate students or academics.

This is a useful book for any language teacher trying to improve their teaching practice through reflection and implementation of new methods and strategies. So far I have one problem. Page 12 is placed next to page 8 so STOP THE PRESSES! . The pages are numbered 8, 12, 9, 10,11,13, 14, 15 ...... Hopefully someone reads this and decides to amend this issue. I also hope it doesn't occur again. I will update the review if there is another issue.

Sit quietly and whisper these poems, and you shall never see the world around you in the same light nor tone. All shall be transfixed. Weep with Rilke. Lament with Rilke. Dance and sing with him. Become immersed in worlds you could never have imagined. Become awash in the world around you.

Flemmings translation is easy and 'readable'. His use of meter, rhythm, and diction makes his translations accessible to the average poetry aficionado. This translation preserves Rilke's mysticism and lyrical quality.

The book is a fine edition for me. I like it's size (portable but not too small for easy reading). The selections are the poems I wanted, & the translating by A. E. Flemming seems superb---preferable to my other edition of Rilke.

This book provides a space in which struggles for indigenous knowledge within communities are articulated, valued, heard, and responded to. The volume takes change as its focus, yet acknowledges that the origins and significance of change are frequently found to be unsettling. Contributors explore different understandings of change that forge sustainable, inclusive and just communities and examine issues related to citizenship, resistance, peacemaking, critical literacies, and second chance opportunities. The authors seek to promote advocacy of change that recognises the importance of an informed engagement with cross-cultural issues in order to foreground those missing perspectives that are often marginalised, silenced, ignored or denied. All contributors are concerned with how the process of change can bridge the gap between social justice and exclusion and develop critical understandings of the implications of changing policy and practice for those within and working with the educational organisations and communities.
