Giuseppe Pitrè, a nineteenth-century Sicilian physician, gathered an enormous wealth of folk and fairy tales as he traveled and treated the poor throughout Palermo. He also received tales from friends and scholars throughout the island of Sicily. A dedicated folklorist, whose significance ranks alongside the Brothers Grimm, he published a 25-volume collection of Sicilian folk tales, legends, songs, and customs between 1871 and 1914. Though first published in their original Sicilian dialect, these tales have never before been translated, collected, and published in English until now.

This historic two-volume set collects 300 and 100 variants of his most entertaining and most important folk and fairy tales, along with lively, vivid illustrations by Carmelo Lettere. In stark contrast to the more literary ambitions of the Grimms' tales, Pitré’s possess a charming, earthy quality that reflect the customs, beliefs, and superstitions of the common people more clearly than any other European folklore collection of the nineteenth century.

About the Author
Jack Zipes (Ph.D. Columbia University) is a Professor of German at the University of Minnesota. His major publications include Sticks and Stones: The Troublesome Success of Children s Literature from Slovenly Peter to Harry Potter (2000), Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales, Children, and the Culture Industry (1997), Fairy Tale as Myth/Myth as Fairy Tale (1994), The Brothers Grimm: From Enchanted Forests to the Modern World (1988), and Fairy Tales and the Art of Subversion: The Classical Genre for Children and the Process of Civilization (1983).

About the Author

Douglass M. Green (1926–1999) was a founding member of the Society for Music Theory. He last taught at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was Professor of Music Theory until his death. Widely known as an expert in the music of Debussy and Berg, Green was the author of many articles and books on musical form and harmony, including the seminal analysis text Form in Tonal Music. He won several honors throughout his lifetime, including appointment as a Fulbright Scholar to Italy, the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award, and the E. W. Doty Professorship of Fine Arts at UT-Austin. Green’s counterpoint classes remain legendary among his students.

Evan Jones is Associate Professor and Coordinator of Music Theory and Composition at the Florida State University College of Music. He has received a Sproull Fellowship from the University of Rochester, a Doctoral Fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and the Alfred Mann Dissertation Prize from the Eastman School. He has published research on music by Lassus, Quantz, Schubert and Xenakis in peer-reviewed journals and essay collections, and edited a two-volume collection of essays on twentieth-century string quartets that received the Society for Music Theory’s Citation of Special Merit.

Enjoyable, but politically incorrect.

This book is very reminiscent of my English childhood and will amuse adults and children alike. Similar ilk to Milly-Molly-Mandy. Be warned, however, there is much use of the word 'bad' in relation to children rather than children's behaviour, some parents may object to this. My 5-year-old found the naughty little sister's antics quite hilarious and greatly enjoyed the short, lively chapters and lovely illustrations. I would recommend this book for little children who would appreciate the English references.

Naughty little girls have more fun

These dozen stories about the high-spirited young sister of the narrator are meant to be read aloud. The naughty little sister has an indulgent father, a disciplinarian mother, and a disapproving older sister who tries to make moral tales out of the bad sister. (The story about her father having to look after her all day was at the beginning of the book, but it would have been a funny comeuppance for the father later in the book.) But children will identify with the physically active and inquisitive little sister, her thoughtless antics, and the inevitable consequences, such as falling off the gate or eating too much spongy trifle. These British stories were written in the 1950s and may require some explanation for American children, but anyone who has had to put up with a bossy, goody-goody sibling like the narrator will enjoy the fun and friends of the naughty little sister, even as they see the mistakes she makes.

overall great book for beginners

Covers everything in detail and had a useful website that helped with understanding the material. Although answers weren't given in the book, the exercises on the website provided instant feedback. I also liked the cultural references.

A real-life financial thriller

A fascinating analysis of fourteen true accounting fraud cases, loaded with juicy details, and a well-researched discussion of the aftereffects on the accounting profession, from both standards and regulatory perspectives. Besides being an interesting read, I also derived substantial professional benefit from learnings related to management culture, internal controls and SOx. This book stimulated some further thoughts about the implications of fraud on the future of accounting practices in the US.

didn't meet my expectations

I read a few books on accounting fraud and this book didn't meet my expectations. I am a CPA and was looking for a more technical and advanced book, which would describe various fraud schemes in detail. This book doesn't contain any cases that I have not heard about before and has not taught me anything new. It may be a good book for someone who is new to accounting and/or just starting to learn about fraudulent companies.
