Children's Fiction about 9/11: Ethnic, National and Heroic Identities (Children's Literature and Culture), by Jo Lampert

In this pioneering and timely book, Lampert examines the ways in which cultural identities are constructed within young adult and children’s literature about the attacks of September 11, 2001. Looking at examples including picture books, young adult novels, and a selection of DC Comics, Lampert finds the co-mingling of xenophobia and tolerance, the binaried competition between good and evil and global harmony and national insularity, and the glorification of both the commonplace hero and the super-human. Specifically, Lampert identifies three significant identity categories encoded in 9/11 books for children--ethnic identities, national identities, and heroic identities--arguing that their formation is contingent upon post-9/11 politics. These shifting identities offer implicit and explicit accounts of what constitute good citizenship, loyalty to nation and community, and desirable attributes in a Western post-9/11 context.

Lampert makes an original contribution to the field of children’s literature by providing a focused and sustained analysis of how texts for children about 9/11 contribute to formations of identity in these complex times of cultural unease and global unrest.

Immigration Policy and Security: U.S., European, and Commonwealth PerspectivesFrom Routledge

Immigration policy in the United States, Europe, and the Commonwealth went under the microscope after the terror attacks of 9/11 and the subsequent events in London, Madrid, and elsewhere. We have since seen major changes in the bureaucracies that regulate immigration―but have those institutional dynamics led to significant changes in the way borders are controlled, the numbers of immigrants allowed to enter, or national asylum policies? This book examines a broad range of issues and cases in order to better understand if, how, and why immigration policies and practices have changed in these countries in response to the threat of terrorism. In a thorough analysis of border policies, the authors also address how an intensification of immigration politics can have severe consequences for the social and economic circumstances of national minorities of immigrant origin.

Review

"Immigration Policy and Security is a thought provoking, intellectually balanced, and impressively comprehensive take on the security implications of immigration in a post-September 11th world. For serious students of the subject its appearance could not be timelier or its contributions more welcome."

--Anthony M. Messina, University of Notre Dame

"Immigration Policy and Security offers thoughtful analyses of how national security concerns that emerged after the September 11, 2001 attacks have shaped immigration and asylum policies in Western democracies. The strengths of the volume are several. Most importantly, it is broadly comparative. The authors are also attentive to changes and continuities in immigration policies in light of newer national security concerns; they provide a rich, textured analysis on the debate over the seriousness of the threat to national security posed by immigration; and they are attentive to varied national origin and legal compositions of migrations to different countries and the degree to which these differences shape national policies. Immigration Policy and Security is particularly attentive to national responses to Muslim immigrants, but also to unauthorized migrants who are to some degree outside the state’s regulatory regime."

--Louis DeSipio, University of California, Irvine

"The tragedy of 9/11 had sharp repercussions on global mobility and America's immigration system. The authors in this volume uncover what policymakers did right and much that they did wrong. This is valuable reading for anyone who wants to parse the rhetoric over immigration restrictions and the terrorism menace."

--B. Lindsay Lowell, Georgetown University

"This excellent collection brings evidence to bear on many of our assumptions about the direction of immigration policies since 9/11. Some are true and others false, it turns out. The authors cover all the main areas of policy-making, from privacy concerns related to international enforcement coordination to the impact of security concerns on Muslims. The chapters are very readable and terrific for course adaptation."

--Jytte Klausen, Brandeis University

"A top quality line-up of contributors provide important insight into our understanding of the contemporary dynamics of post 9/11 migration politics and policy-making. The comparative reach, conceptual insight and wealth of empirical detail make this a major contribution to the field that deserves the attention of all those with an interest in these important issues."

--Andrew Geddes, The University of Sheffield

New Black Man, by Mark Anthony Neal

From headlines to street corners, the message resounds: Black men are in crisis. Politicians, preachers, and pundits routinely cast blame on those already ostracized within African American communities. But the crisis of black masculinity does not rest with "at-risk" youth of the hip-hop generation or men "on the down low" alone. In this provocative new book, acclaimed cultural critic Mark Anthony Neal argues that the "Strong Black Man"-an ideal championed by generations of African American civic leaders-may be at the heart of problems facing black men today.

One of the most brilliant cultural critics of his generation...Neal writes gracefully, thinks sharply, speaks cogently and is old school and new school at once. He's my favorite cultural critic and one hip brother. -- Michael Eric Dyson, Chicago Sun-Times
You won't find many scholars with Neal's deep and abiding knowledge of contemporary black popular culture, and you won't find any able to throw down such head-noddin' prose. -- Robin D. G. Kelley, Columbia University
Mark Anthony Neal's critique of old modes of discussing black masculinity is eloquent. Indeed, his analysis of the 'the strong black man' and the risks that idea poses to black liberation is long overdue. Engaging, thoughtful, and soulful, this important book is part cultural criticism and part blueprint for a new version of black masculinity (without homophobia and misogyny). I, for one, welcome the arrival onto the scene of the 'new black man'. -- Dwight A. McBride
You need oxygen to breathe more than the fetid air of homophobia, misogyny, antiblack racism in the empire and its possessions. Read Mark Anthony Neal's New Black Man. Here, Neal redefines the 'burden' and expands the struggle for a society free of denigration and violence. -- Joy James
Mark Anthony Neal has always been a daring scholar, but in this work he does pirouettes on a razor's edge, deliberately and deftly defying the keepers of the weary worn 'race man' trope and all its essentialist trappings. -- E. Patrick Johnson
Mark Anthony Neal's New Black Man is a fascinating exploration of an important scholar's acknowledgement of black feminism as a central mode of cultural investigation and a mode of humane existence. -- Michael Awkward
Neal's new work is sharp, provocative, and often laugh-out-loud funny in the manner of Michael Eric Dyson and Ishmael Reed (caveat: Neal's language can be rough). Taken in conjunction with Phillip Brian Harper's Are We Not Men?:
Masculine Anxiety and the Problems of African-American Identity , this book is a clarion call that should be read by the entire African American community.
. -- Library Journal
Neal is refreshingly honest in his attempt to forge a new model of Black manhood. He admits that he himself is still struggling to overcome the sexist and homophobic views he held in the past. There are still occasions when he refuses to speak out against homophobia, fearing criticism from other Black males. However, Neal understands the importance of opposing the 'Strong Black Man' concept, which often denies the humanity of others...New Black Man offers many stimulating ideas and slays many of the sacred cows of the Black Community...New Black Man is an important book. Neal is a proud member of the hip-hop generation. Considering the many antiprogressive messages in that genre of music and the culture it produces, his book is a welcome addition to the discipline of Black popular cultural studies. -- Free Inquiry

Well, Alright! The Brotha is Fighting Sexism and Homophobia!
By Jeffery Mingo
Dr. Neal asserts that the decades-old image of the "Strong Black Man" is often used to excuse misogyny and homophobia among black men. He goes on record in detailing how black male adults use the excuse of white racism in order to get away with abusing black women, black children, and black gays and lesbians. Thus, Dr. Neal posits that we need a "New Black Man": one who is committed to supporting black feminism, fighting anti-gay bigotry, and providing childcare for one's biological or adopted children.

This book really, really, really needs to be read alongside Patricia Hill-Collins "Black Sexual Politics." This book is original and refreshing, but there are many ways in which it is just a man saying "I second!" to what Dr. Hill-Collins already brought up. Both book name a lot of problems without providing many solutions, but that in no way denies that both are fierce reads. SNAP!

This book would be a great introduction to black feminism for men or women. It refers to many other texts on which progressive readers must get their hands. But then again, I thought some texts were missing. His ruminations on hip hop were almost exactly like the one in Rebecca Walker's "Daring to Be Bad" anthology. He talks of black fatherhood, but never mentions Earl Ofari Hutchison who has written two books on the topic. Still, he sometimes praises black women writers that I think are problematic. Julianne Malveaux has written things that I think are obnoxiously homophobic. I once saw a reading where Ntozake Shange was high and yelled out, "You can always a N*GGA to take you home!"

Throughout this book, Dr. Neal, a heterosexual brother, gives praise to his academic mentor Dr. Alexis De Veaux, a lesbian sister. I loved this unity across multiple identities. Due to "Will and Grace" and other cultural productions, it is often assumed that gay men and straight women can get along, but it's never brought up whether lesbians and straight men can do the same thing. This book answers that concerns; it almost reminds me of Steve Martin having lesbian friends in the film "L.A. Story."

The New York Times, approximately year ago, asked, "What counts for a gay book now that heterosexual writers are writing compelling and non-marginal gay characters and plots?" After years of writing from saints such as Audre Lorde, Essex Hemphill, Joseph Beam, Bev Smith, and many others, now black heterosexuals or blacks that do not posit their sexual identities are writing outstanding work championing gay rights. Besides this text, books by Dr. Guy-Sheftall and Dr. Abdel-Shehid have begun a new and exciting tradition. But to be honest, Dr. Neal spoke much more about sexism than homophobia and in no way do I feel that the straight black men that Dr. Neal critiques are somehow less homophobic than they are sexist. In the same way that he provides a laundry list a canonical black feminist writing, he or some other progressive scholar could write an equally lengthy list of phenomenal works by black lesbians and gay men. He gives catchy titles to all of his chapters but gives his gay chapter the borrowing, and possibly offensive title "Q***rs in a Barrel." He says he hopes his daughters will be able to state proudly whatever their sexual identities are, but he never says point blank, "I would be just as proud of my daughters if they were lesbian or bisexual as if they were heterosexual." If Matt Groening and Barack Obama have made such statements, why hasn't Dr. Neal?

Dr. Neal is very humble. He speaks of areas where he still struggles to address sexism or misogyny. He shies away from naming himself the "New Black Man." Dr. Dyson once called Cornel West "the humblest man in the world." That moniker could apply to Dr. Neal. His discussion on sleep apnea is important reading for heavyset brothers and other men who snore loudly at night.

Like Dr. Valdivia in "A Latina in Hollywood," this had a gushy chapter on parenting to which I couldn't relate. But if Cornel West and many others have written parenting books, it must be an important concern for many individuals out there.

This is a quick read. It may almost remind one of a series of magazine essays, rather than academic work. Many black folk without elite educations should be able to follow it.

This was very strong and refreshing cultural studies. I am definitely adding this book to my "Profeminist Men" amazon list.

Excellent book
By E. King
For anyone seeking a better understanding of the inner working of black men - this is the book for you. I love how Neal expresses a mature and uncomplicated view of the inner struggles some black men face. It made me laugh and go "hmmm" I would recommend this book - for mature readers only

From the Publisher & a Critic (courtesy of Barnes & Noble)
By Earl R. Sutton
FROM THE PUBLISHER

"'In this book, acclaimed cultural critic Mark Anthony Neal argues that the ''Strong Black Man'' - an ideal championed by generations of African American civic leaders - may be at the heart of problems facing black men today. Despite the good intentions of its creation, he contends, this rigid model is used too often as justification for the oppression and mistreatment of black women and children. Neal urges us to imagine instead a ''New Black Man'' - a revolutionary model of black masculinity for the twenty-first century that moves beyond patriarchy to promote family, community, and diversity.' Part memoir, part manifesto, this book celebrates the black man of our times in all his vibrancy and virility. It is a tribute to a new face on the horizon of black America that is not to be missed."

FROM THE CRITICS

Library Journal

"Who or what is the 'New Black Man'? Neal (black popular culture, Duke Univ.; Songs in the Key of Black Life) argues that, to survive, contemporary black men must disassociate themselves from the figure of the 'Strong Black Man' as designed by W.E.B. Du Bois and Frederick Douglass and instead embrace that of the New Black Man, whose strength resides in community, family, and diversity. This new model derides sexism and homophobia, which Neal argues have sprung inadvertently from the models of the past. Far from being a dull polemic, Neal's new work is sharp, provocative, and often laugh-out-loud funny in the manner of Michael Eric Dyson and Ishmael Reed (caveat: Neal's language can be rough). Taken in conjunction with Phillip Brian Harper's Are We Not Men?: Masculine Anxiety and the Problems of African-American Identity, this book is a clarion call that should be read by the entire African American community. Highly recommended for all academic and public libraries."--Anthony J. Adam, Prairie View A&M Univ. Lib., TX Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

What Photography Is, by James Elkins

In What Photography Is, James Elkins examines the strange and alluring power of photography in the same provocative and evocative manner as he explored oil painting in his best-selling What Painting Is. In the course of an extended imaginary dialogue with Roland Barthes's Camera Lucida, Elkins argues that photography is also about meaninglessness--its apparently endless capacity to show us things that we do not want or need to see--and also about pain, because extremely powerful images can sear permanently into our consciousness. Extensively illustrated with a surprising range of images, the book demonstrates that what makes photography uniquely powerful is its ability to express the difficulty--physical, psychological, emotional, and aesthetic--of the act of seeing.

Review

'The most exciting feature for me of this fascinating book was its articulation of the importance of writing in our engagement with photography. Writing for Elkins means the capacity to elicit articulate intensity in the tracking of the intricate turns and balances that can, and should, take place in a mind responding to expressive non-discursive materials. Here the distinctive feature of photography as a medium is not the punctum or the pursuit of sublimity but the photograph's powers for producing self-reflexive attention to how the work makes us see our own seeing--a power that is at risk when we become proud of the rhetorics that displace what the engagements of distinctive writing can bring to our attention.' -  Charles Altieri, University of California, Berkeley

'In an impassioned dialogue with Roland Barthes, Jim Elkins argues that photography is not "about" representation and memory―those aspects of the Barthean punctum; rather, photography is "at war with our attention." If we focus on its essential materiality and physicality, photography shows us things we would often prefer not to see―the "splotches and stains, cracks, unpleasant shadows, errant dust" in our natural environment as well as the human pain too hard to look at and yet unavoidably there. What is given by photography is the "grainy substance of the world" in all its irritating contradictions, its "displeasures"--the aporias that make the act of seeing itself so difficult. Elkins’s disillusioned meditation on how photography actually works upon the viewer is as original as it is profound.'  Marjorie Perloff, author of Radical Artifice: Writing Poetry in the Age of Media and Unoriginal Genius: Poetry by Other Means in the 21st Century

A good book goes against a great book
By John Armstrong
At the beginning of What Photography Is (WPI) author James Elkins notes that while it shares a title format with a book he wrote some years before, What Painting Is (2000), it is not a companion to the earlier work, and relates to it only in a very general way. What WPI is is his response to Roland Barthes' Camera Lucida (CL, 1980) one of the most famous and influential books ever written about photography, and, for Elkins, one of the most frustrating and annoying.

In the preface to the book he states his intention to "write against and through" Barthes, and moreover to do so in the form that Barthes chose for Camera Lucida, which is free-flowing personal writing which avoids, as much as possible, the heavy apparatus of academic discourse (above all documented references to the author's own and other academic writers' theories and sayings) and explores its subject in a direct, subjective, even introspective way.

He begins Chapter 1 "Writing" by offering his own version of the first couple paragraphs of CL, taking over whole sentences but making two substantive changes: (1) the inciting image, where he substitutes for Barthes' picture of the younger brother of Napoleon ("I am looking at eyes that looked at the Emperor") a picture of a selenite window in a Southwestern adobe structure, and (2) the medium to which photography is declared to be in opposition, substituting for Barthes's Cinema his own Painting. (The latter seemingly referring to his other book because he does not talk at all about painting in the body of WPI). After that he goes off on his own and talks about writing and Barthes' CL and concludes the chapter by saying (p. 14): "The only way to reply to a book as strange as Barthes's is to write another one even stranger." And then, in the next five chapters, he does exactly that.

In Chapter 2 "Selenite, Ice, Salt" he comes back to the image of the selenite window that he started out with and adds two more, one looking down into transparent (where not cracked) lake ice and another, a magnified image of a crystal of rock salt that contained (until scientists extracted it) a bubble of trapped water - and bacteria - from the Permian Age. In the end he dismisses all three as "failed looks into or through something" and "failed photographic windows." He includes some more photos, including Kertész's Little Ernest, which Barthes' included in CL as an example of death as punctum ("Is he alive today?") and which Elkins takes as Barthes' canonical "ordinary" image (i.e. other than the described but unshown picture of his mother at age 5 posing with her brother in the Winter Garden). In this chapter Elkins rejects Barthes' punctum-dependent way of looking at photographs as yielding only "toy journeys" and at the same time, I think not totally consciously, starts to reveal his own way of looking, which, with its little made up stories about the origins of scratches and marks and smudges and masked out areas, seems every bit as much about toy journeys, even if of a very different kind.

Chapters 3, 4, and 5 "From the Green River to the Brunswick Peninsula", "A drop of Water, World Trade Center Dust", and "The Rapatronic Camera" are the heart of the book (even though Elkins says at some point that his book has no heart). They contain many photographs that most people would accept as within the normal limits of photography, and they are clearly carefully selected and grouped. Elkins continues to "write against" Barthes in these chapters, but he also talks a lot about various kinds of photography, even if, more often than not, mostly to reject them. In Chapter 3 he rejects photographs of people (Barthes's terminal weakness). In Chapter 4 he gives a much longer list, starting with people (including family photos, found photography, and street photography), and then also the sublime, the picturesque, the surreal, the simply beautiful, and anything with overt cultural or emotional content. As part of this he rejects practically all fine art photography (the one exception being Thomas Demand, because he takes pictures of paper). For him all these kinds of photography are "distractions". What's left when you eliminate them all is what he calls "hard" photography.

The approved images, with some omissions, are as follows. Chapter 3: side-by-sides, including Mark Klett's uncannily exact reshootings of Timothy O'Sullivan images done over 100 years before, Robert Humphrey's reshootings of all (?) the obelisk markers on the Arizona-Mexico border (done by a scientist for scientific purposes), and his own grandmother's "Red Dot" stereoscopic images (which Elkins praises as exceptionally high-quality 3D), then photos that become interesting through blown-up details, including the anonymous ca. 1924 picture of Darwin's Rhea (a rare flightless bird found in Tierra del Fuego, which appears on the WPI cover). Chapter 4: pictures with murky (unfocused, smeared-looking) "surrounds", and lots of microphotographs of one-celled (or less?) organisms, some made by the author using his own equipment. And Chapter 5: five 1 millionth of a sec exposures of the beginnings of an atomic explosion taken by Harold D. Edgerton (whose iconic drop of milk image had been rejected by Barthes in CL as an example of a "shock" picture i.e. a guaranteed attention getter).

In Chapter 6 "Lingqi" Elkins returns to pictures of people, but only of the most bizarre - or for him, "hardest" - sort. Apart from some general discussion it is entirely devoted to a series of anonymous photos taken in Beijing in 1905 of a man being executed by lingqi or "death by a thousand cuts". The chapter includes 11 images, some of which are details of others. Elkins indicates that he learned of the pictures from a posthumously published book of George Bataille and has published them himself in other places and also has used them as course materials. Here he gives virtually no context (what he does give is on pp. 193-4, where he says that the goal was not infliction of pain but the destruction of the soul - ah the mysterious orient). He stresses the difficulty of looking at the pictures and seems to advocate (including to his students) their use a way to experience pain through photography, but it's not clear to me whether the goal is enlightenment or simply self-flagellation. He talks a lot of theory in the chapter, about the body as a locus of pain and monstrosity, but does not touch on a point that Barthes might have made had he looked at the pictures and thought about them, which is the difference between photography and film: what Christian Metz said after him, that looking at photography is fetishism (the looker controls the image), whereas looking at film is voyeurism (the image controls the looker). I think the linqgi would be much more "difficult" as film than as the collection of photographs that Elkins presents.

Chapter 6 is the last chapter, and the last nine pages of it leave the main subject of lingqi behind and offer a conclusion to the whole book. He returns to the world of art history and theory and criticism that he left behind (mostly) at the beginning of the book and appears ready to go back to academic business as usual. He concludes as follows: "I have tried to write against the warm, moist and invasive sadness [of Barthes' CL]. I have tried to write a sterile book, with a minimum of interruptions from pathos, art, memory, loss or nostalgia, because that is what I think photography also is." The final sentence is ambiguous, but I read it as meaning that photography is also sterile as the book is.

As opposed to each other as they seem to be, WPI and CL are for me much more alike than different. Two smart people who care about photography pick a few photographs (from thousands, from millions) and weave stories around them. They put aside their academic modes of thought and focus on articulating and rationalizing their feelings. Barthes' pictures cluster around the center of photography (what it is about for the vast majority of people); Elkins are scattered around the periphery, where few people go. But interestingly, they agree on something where many others would disagree: they both gravitate to straight photography in which the relationship of the image to the object (or at least the physical object) is as direct as the optics will allow. (I assume this is why Elkins, p. 175, dismisses the work of Noriko Furunishi, whose dizzying earthscapes, manipulated as they are, seem a perfect fit for his "hard" aesthetic.) They also are both accepting, if not actively biased towards, black and white photography. And finally I would say that they are both resistant to whatever in a photograph is being forced on them by the photographer, and respond to it by settling on something else to look at in the picture. (This, I believe, is what underlies Barthes' jump from the studium to the punctum.)

CL and WPI are both all about reception of photographs and say little about production, intent, or cultural significance, or about photography as art. CL is more proactive (creative if you will), Elkins more reactive. That may be partly due to timing, but it probably also reflects a difference in their temperaments. I personally prefer Barthes because he says things that catch me by surprise. Elkins doesn't do this, his thought process is just too orderly.

CL is a great book. WPI is a good book. Neither is for everybody. If you're going to read either one, I recommend reading both. 4 stars for WPI.

Possibly one of the worst books I've read
By Veronica

Possibly one of the worst books I've read. This is an internal monolog of the author, full of digressions, resulting in very few interesting conclusions. If "Camera Lucida" is your bedside book you might want to read it, but do you read it, because otherwise you will never understand the fight that Elkins has with Barthes.

"This is an excellent collection of essays focusing upon primary issues in Native American history from European contact through the early nineteenth century. Holistic narrative, many perspectives, fluid writing
By Sherin
I purchased this book for an advanced Native American History class. I wasn't disappointed. As the subject line states, the book treated the post-contact North American continent in a holistically. The volume was inclusive of many perspectives as it is a collection of excerpts from others' work. From David S. Jones's "Virgin Soils Revisited" to John Mack Faragher's "More Motley than Mackinaw", the book works to dispel the treatment of Native American history over the past half century as the recordings of 'manifest destiny' and the 'conquering of the noble savage'. This book correctly presents the peoples that populated this country first as intelligent, multicultural, multilingual, complex, coherent persons with agency that quickly adapted to their changing environment with the introduction of a foreign people. Highly recommend for those considering which book to choose concerning Native American history.

I hated reading this book
By Kylie
Needed it for class. I hated reading this book. It is huge, the size of a textbook and the stories are long. You really need to like the subject if you want to read this book.
