Not a lazy read

The Importance of Being Lazy: In Praise of Play, Leisure, and Vacations, by Al Gini

First and foremost, this book is not a lazy read-it requires attention and commitment from the reader. It is informative and clearly well-researched. I find it amusing that a book on laziness requires so much of its readers.

Gini's main thesis in this book is that Americans aren't necessarily overworked, but we are defiantly under-rested. We work more hours a week than anyone (even the Japanese, he repeatedly points out), but take far less vacation, not even the vacation we're due. And when we aren't working, we certainly aren't resting. He likens the need for leisure and relaxation with the concept of the Sabbath, a useful analogy he continues through the book. Leisure time should be unwired, reflective, even spiritual-a way to look at ourselves and grow as people, bettering ourselves and becoming more connected to our communities and families.

Gini considers many reasons for us not embracing leisure and play. Primarily, we work too much-our careers define us. And even if we don't let our careers define us, we need more stuff (so does consumerism cause workaholism or is it the other way around?) Even during weekends and vacations, our time is packed with structured and prepackaged activities that claim to offer us whatever we feel is lacking in our lives for a few hundred bucks. And then it's all supposed to come to a screeching halt at retirement. We would be better served, he suggests, to find ways to improve ourselves and become more comfortable with who we are inside than flitting away all our time and money on flashiness (except when he says it, it doesn't sound nearly so shallow and new-agey).

Generally, if you have time and attention to read this book, you are not one of the ones who needs to read this book. Perhaps we are suppose to go out and proclaim the good news of laziness to others, or maybe we are suppose to pat ourselves on the back for not spending too much time at work and in front of the TV to enjoy other parts of life. Or maybe we should get our noses out of books for a little while and go play...

Slow Lifestyle Primer

This well-researched book is a great place to start to learn about the slow lifestyle. Al Gini is Professor of Philosophy at Loyola University Chicago. He's also a business consultant. He previously explored a mixture of business, work, and philosophy, in his book My Job, My Self. Be warned, he describes himself as addicted to work.

The Importance of Being Lazy is about personal identity in culture. Our most frequent response to the question, "who am I", is to say what we do for a living. The book is about who we are and what we do when not at work. Professor Gini's own university has only a few books on leisure but thousands on work, jobs, and careers. We value work, we don't value leisure.

If vacations are a project of self-definition, then what does it mean to not even take vacations? Vacation starvation becomes a malady. The consequences, as Josef Pieper pointed out, is the destruction of culture. The idea of leisure time was to refresh and renew to have a life outside of work. But market forces have largely been against this.

Adam Smith said, "Consumption is the sole purpose of all production." Al Gini says, "To Shop is to be. " Our culture has degenerated from a society based around people to those around things."

There are five problem areas:

1.Lack of Self Development. Without adequate time and energy we become passive consumers of entertainment. This makes us dull.

2. Lack of Autonomy. Time away from constraints and conformity of work is necessary to build a more authentic sense of self. Spending all our time at work makes us compliant, and often against our own best interests.

3. Effects of Social Life. Less time means more superficial interactions with others. Lack of social involvement degrades our social environment. We are too busy to be courteous. We are too busy for civic involvement.

4. Positional Competition. In other words, "Keeping up with the Joneses." Our focus is on the superficial. We self identify through our buying habits.

5. Cognitive and Valuational Confusion. You might expect a title like this from an academic. However, the book is wonderfully free of academic writing. What does Professor Gini mean? Advertisers create discontent by holding up impossible promises and standards to which consumers aspire.

Professor Gini cites a host of thinkers including, Hegel, Kipling, William James, Marcuse, and Aristotle. My own favorite is Mark Twain, "I do not like work even when someone else does it.

We need to find a balance between work and leisure. We are responsible for at least some of the choices we make.
The notes are a wonderful resource for further reading.

The nineteenth century is sometimes seen as a lacuna between two literary periods. In terms of women’s writing, however, the era between the death of Mary Wollstonecraft and the 1860s feminist movement produced a coherent body of major works, impelled by an ongoing dialogue between Enlightenment ‘feminism’ and late Romanticism. This study focuses on the dynamic interaction between Lord Byron and Madame de Staël, Lady Morgan, Mary Shelley and Jane Austen, challenging previous critics’ segregation of the male Romantic writers from their female peers.

The Romantic movement in general unleashed the creative ambitions of nineteenth-century female novelists, and the public voice of Byron in particular engaged them in transnational issues of political, national and sexual freedom. Byronism had itself been shaped by the poet’s incursion onto a literary scene where women readers were dominant and formidable intellectuals such as Madame de Staël were lionized. Byron engaged in rivalrous dialogue with the novels of his female friends and contemporaries, such as Caroline Lamb, Mary Shelley and Jane Austen, whose critiques of Romantic egotism helped prompt his own self-parody in Don Juan. Later Victorian novelists, such as George Sand, the Brontë sisters and Harriet Beecher Stowe, wove their rejection of their childhood attraction to Byronism, and their dawning awareness of the significance for women of Lady Byron’s actions, into the feminist fabric of their art.

About the Author

John M. Kline is a Professor of International Business Diplomacy in the Walsh School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University. He is a past Director of the Master of Science in Foreign Service Program and the Karl F. Landegger Program in International Business Diplomacy. His teaching focuses on international business-government relations, international investment strategies and negotiations, and international business ethics.

In addition to Dr. Kline's textbook, Ethics for International Business, he is the author of three other books as well as numerous scholarly articles and chapters in co-authored and edited books.

Prior to joining the Georgetown faculty, Dr. Kline was Director of International Economic Policy at the National Association of Manufacturers. He received his doctorate in political science from The George Washington University and holds a masters degree in international relations from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies.

Dr. Kline serves as a consultant to various international organizations and private multinational corporations. Why don't we make this good book even better? I happened to notice that the 2nd equation of A1.2 on page 339 was wrong. Cosine value should always be between -1 and +1. In table A3.1 on page 393, SI unit for the last three columns is also problematic. I think it should be sqaure meter per second multiplied by 10 to -6. Check those out.

I have found this book to be an extremely good reference over the years for a non-meteorologist; this coming from a biogeochemist - I have used it for years and am now buying it. Another very good reference is Stahl (of course)

An original and rewarding book

You will make friends and influence people with this book. You will be able to invite friends to amazing dinner parties at which you can serve food from all corners of the World and impress them with your knowledge. The World is divided into nine sections: Africa, East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Middle East, South and Central America, North America, Oceania and Europe. Each section has between three and nine contributions, forty-seven in all, mainly from eminent ethnomusicologists and those, like me, interested in food. Each contribution is a complete meal for six people. That should keep you going for about a year without repeating yourself.

Start off somewhere exotic like Tonga. After 3½ hours you could be serving `Otai' a coconut fruit drink to welcome your guests, followed by `Ota Ika' a tasty dish of raw fish seasoned wih lime juice, onions, garlic, chili pepper and tomatoes, and `Lupulu' which are baked packets of taro or spinach leaves containing corned beef, fish or chicken (the Tongans like corned beef the best), Puaka Ta'o, baked roast pork and sweet potatoes, finished off with tropical fruits, ice-cream and fruitcake.

For your next dinner party go to Estonia and try the recipes for cucumber salad, beet and herring salad, sauerkraut, blood sausage and creamed semolina on fruit soup. All good peasant fare. Helpfully drinks are also recommended: Saku brand beer and juniper berry soda. Have some bread too. Bread is sacred in Estonia and giving the heel to a young woman will ensure that she has large breasts.

Take your friends on a trip to Namibia and treat them to `Braaied', grilled goat or lamb chops, `Mahangu', sorghum or maize meal porridge with a spicy tomato sauce, `Ekaka', fresh spinach and Oshikuki, doughnuts or pumpkin fritters. These recipes are from Minette Mans' 88-year old Namibian mother.

I was flattered to be asked to contribute the Balinese section. I provided my family recipes for `Base Genep,' which is a spice paste used in many dishes, `Babi Kecap', pork in kecap sauce, which is eaten during the Balinese ceremonies of Galungan and Nyepi, `Lawar', spicy green beans, which accompanies all ceremonies, `Nasi Putih' steamed rice, `Krupuk Udang', shrimp crackers, `Tahu Goreng', fried tofu, and `Pisang Goreng', banana fritters. We serve most of these in my restaurant in Ubud, which Sean Williams frequented every day during her visits to Bali in the 1980s.

Every contributor was asked to write a bit about the role of music and food in their society. The links between music and food are strong and it is interesting to compare them. This is the first book of its kind and may be responsible for creating a new subject which Sean Williams calls gastromusicology. She is a Professor of Ethnomusicology at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, and has studied Indonesian and Irish music since the 1970s. She contributed the recipes from Sunda, West Java and Ireland.

Not only are there anthropological essays with each contribution but there is also recommended listening. So you can entertain your guests with CDs of music from the gastronomic region of the moment. Further, there are recommended reading lists and internet sites to allow you to go into greater depth on your own and really impress your friends. Not just that but we were all asked to contribute a proverb. Mine was `Nasi sudah menjadi bubur' (literally `The rice has already become porridge') or `There's no use crying over spilt milk'. From Bolivia: `The angrier the cook, the spicier the dish'. Northern Ghana: `Eat the same food every day so you know what killed you'. Egypt: `An onion from a dear one is worth more than a goat'. Judeo-Spanish Morocco: `She went to buy cilantro and came back nine months pregnant'.

Sean Williams has thought about it all. She's aware that there are vegetarians and vegans out there and people who keep kosher. For them there's a helpful chapter called `I'm not eating that!' It gives dietary modifications. She's also created a special page on her web site which has more information about the meals and printable shopping lists so that you don't have to copy down all the ingredients before you go out shopping ([...] academic.evergreen.edu/w/williams/cookbook.htm).

The one criticism I have about the book is the lack of colour photographs (apart from the glorious cover). I rather think they are essential for a cookbook, but I understand that they increase the printing costs enormously. Sean Williams' web site, however, contains colour photographs of the dishes, which at least is some compensation.

Finally, I must mention the great tag line on the back cover: `It's Chapati and I'll Fry if I Want to!'. Alternatives, also from Indian cooking, which almost made it, were: `My Pappadum Told Me, `Oh, You Beautiful Dal,' and `Paperback Raita.'

I recommend this book warmly to delight body and mind and all the senses.

It's hard to decide whether to just sit and read the recipes and the reflections and experiences of the contributors or actually get into the kitchen to try the recipes myself. This is a great and very interesting insight into food and cultures from people who've experienced it first hand. I highly recommend it.

Dense, wordy... sleep inducing...

Very dense, but helpful and diverse with a variety of insights into the various types of artistic therapy tools available for clients. The black and white photos where off putting - color images of the works would have been much more engaging. Case studies - always helpful and I would have appreciated others.

Easy to read and rich in knowledge

This text was a joy to read on a screen, where as with other texts this may not be the case. The book is organized beautifully in a way which allows the reader to flip through it at a fast rate.
It is rich in knowledge and a graceful understanding of the evolution of art therapy and what it is today.

Rent, don't buy this one

Rent, don't buy this book. It is an important read because of the editor who is an interesting and intelligent art therapist and professor. But I have to agree with the reviewer who says it serves as a good sleep inducer. The lack of editing and the lack of focus in many of the chapters is too out of control and frankly makes an exciting topic into one boring essay after the next. Media and materials should be dynamic and exciting. It is too bad this book uses up that book title and makes it hard for another author to take on this topic in a clear and inspiring way.
