Somehow I discovered Mary Poppins at the our local library as a child I immediately was enthralled and enchanted by the books. They taught me that there is both practicality and magic in life, and that I needed to explore and exist in both. This analysis of the Poppins books by PL Travers gets it The author presents the setting in Edwardian England, social roles and status, Travers biography and writing style, insights into the governess' role and the deeper meaning of Mary Poppins adventures. Originally written in Italian, it seems to be particularly well translated. I do disagree with the authorin one regard. I see Poppins as a powerful witch, not merely a trickster figure, who could cross the boundaries between the mundane and the magical and could create change and bring things to order. Although she does present paradoxical and subversive events, these adventures on the children's outings are Experiences, not to be explained. And Mary Poppins never explains anything!
This book is an analysis of the book series, not the Disneyesque cheerfully odd and greatly diminished cleaned up screen Mary. Apparently issues now in paperback, it's much more affordable than previously. If you love this character and want deeper insights definitely read this book.

Critical Race Theory Matters is a well synchronized effort by four Professors at the University of Wyoming. This work is centralized around Critical Race Theory (CRT). CRT has evolved from years of multicultural studies and education around the country. The belief is that some form of structural change is required for true equality in America to take shape. This book is a manuscript for the issues still prevalent in a segregated and racist educational system.

The purpose of this book is to explain the structural difficulties that are in place inside American Education. These difficulties are essentially described as roadblocks towards equality. The authors draw on various educational experiences from around the United States and cite several progressive racial theorists throughout their work. It is obvious that this book cumulates difficult and progressive issues that have been missed by current standardized multicultural education curricula.

The book's true strength is in the readability of language chosen by the authors and editor. Void of overwhelming educational lingo, this book does not try to hide its meaning behind educational linguistic walls. This book is the edge of a battle cry to change the educational structures as we know them today. The authors are well spoken, and are the first to admit that the power is in the struggle towards equality.

Critiques of this work would point towards the lack of solutions to these ever apparent properties. The theme is towards social justice, but the book is weighted by social inequalities. Although the authors do a fantastic job of identifying problems, solutions are left to interpretation. They point towards involving students in working towards social justice as part of a CRT classroom, but few examples are given as to what this would look like in a classroom.

This text is easy to read, easy to understand, and thus, more useful. Other books on Critical Race Theory are more difficult to read. The print on this book is bigger, and the terminology understandable.

About the Author

Hakeem Ibikunle Tijani, PhD, is currently an associate professor of African and African Diaspora History at Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland. He was a Commonwealth scholar at SOAS, University of London and a recipient of the prestigious U.S. Military National Merit Award, 2003. He has received research grants from Harry Truman Library and Institute, the MacMath Endowment Foundation, and Henderson State University Faculty Development. His most recent grant is from the American Historical Association 2005 Schmitt Research Award. He is the editor of Nigeria's Urban History: Past and Present, Oxford, 2006.

William H. Jeynes is professor of education at California State University, Long Beach. He graduated first in his class at Harvard University and also graduated from the University of Chicago. He has spoken for the White House and various U.S. Government Departments. He has spoken for both the G. W. Bush and Obama administrations. He has spoken for foreign and UN leaders, Harvard University, Cambridge University, and the Harvard Family Research Project. His 4 point proposal given to the Acting President of Korea was passed and became the foundation for their economic and family policy to arise from the Asian Economic Crisis of 1997-1998. His work has appeared in most of the nation's finest newspapers and in Ivy League journals. He has approximately 100 publications.
