About the Author

Elana Shohamy is a Professor and Chair of Language Education program at the School of Education, Tel-Aviv University. Her research focuses on language policy in education and societies within a framework of critical applied linguistics, specifically in relation to immigrants and minority groups, rights and activism. In the past few years she has worked extensively on the topic of linguistic landscape, specifically documenting the LL of Israel with its linguistic complexity (Ben Rafael, Shohamy, et al. 2006) and on topics related to language in the public space including LL of tourism and education. Her recent books include: The Languages of Israel (1999, with Bernard Spolsky, Multilingual Matters), The Power of Tests: Critical perspective of the use of language tests (2001, Longman); and Language policy: Hidden Agendas and New Approaches (2006). She is currently working on a manuscript entitled: 'In the name of language', examining among others methods of revival of Hebrew. Prof Shohamy is also the current editor of the journal Language Policy.

Durk Gorter is now Ikerbasque Research Professor at the Faculty of Education of the University of the Basque Country in San Sebastian/Donostia, where he carries out work on multilingualism and minority languages. From 1979 to 2007 he was a researcher in the sociology of language and head of the department of social sciences at the Fryske Akademy in Ljouwert/Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. Since 1994 he has been part-time full professor at the Universiteit van Amsterdam in the sociolinguistics of Frisian. He has been involved in survey studies of the Frisian language situation and European minority languages, on which he has published numerous books and articles. He also does comparative work on the education of minority languages in the framework of the Mercator-Education project. He edited a book called Linguistic Landscape: a New Approach to Multilingualism (Multilingual Matters, 2006).

The Adaptation Industry re-imagines adaptation not as an abstract process, but as a material industry. It presents the adaptation industry as a cultural economy of six interlocking institutions, stakeholders and decision-makers all engaged in the actual business of adapting texts: authors; agents; publishers; book prize committees; scriptwriters; and screen producers and distributors. Through trading in intellectual property rights to cultural works, these six nodal points in the adaptation network are tightly interlinked, with success for one party potentially auguring for success in other spheres. But marked rivalries between these institutional forces also exist, with competition characterizing every aspect of the adaptation process. This book constructs an overdue sociology of contemporary literary adaptation, never losing sight of the material and institutional dimensions of this powerful process.

Exhaustive Analysis, but Minimizes the Contribution of Individual Talents

I really like parts of this book: Murray has delved deeply into the industrial conditions shaping the way a film adaptation appears on screen. She is particularly good on the idea of synergy; that publishing and cinematic interests go hand in hand, especially when it comes to the question of obtaining rights to film a book. She also focuses on the roles agents play in forging the best deals for authors across various media. However I think her book overlooks the fact that adaptations are the product of creative talents: whatever the industrial forces shaping an adaptation, it still has to be put together by screenwriters and directors, and responded to by audiences, who might interpret what they say in a very different way from the ways in which the producers/marketeers might want the film to be interpreted.

Clear, concise, well-organized text

I'm using Dan Hosken's book for my "Introduction to Music Technology" course in fall 2010 at the City University of New York, Brooklyn College. After much frustration with another text last spring, I was delighted to read Dan's book over the summer. He covers the crucial topics, including basics of acoustics/psychoacoustics, how computers function, digital audio, audio equipment, mixing/composing software, notation software, pedagogical software, sampling, and synthesis. He explains things clearly and includes plenty of figures and photos.

My only criticism is that he spends much time on synthesis and sampling relative to what I cover in an introductory music technology course. I like both topics, but feel that the deeper discussion of them would be better placed in a book on composing computer music rather than an introductory class. Nevertheless, better too much than too little; and so this is a minor issue. I'm very happy with this book.

Easy to read, and very informative. I recommend this to anyone who at any point is using audio recording/editing software, instruments that require amplification, microphones, recording equipment of any sort, mixing boards...excellent for beginners.

A smart and original contribution to gender, cultural and technology studies

Enteen's term "digital creolization" cleverly bespeaks her project: how the development of a common language in online spaces formulates and revises notions of identity, nation, and community. Through her exploration of how non-native English speakers adapt English words online to communicate non-Western and often specifically Thai notions of identity, Virtual English demonstrates how these users disrupt hegemonic assumptions about gender, race and sexuality. Enteen's argument unfolds naturally through her sharp analysis of timely and engaging examples. Well-written, engaging, and through-provoking, Virtual English is both a pleasure to read and a smart and unique contribution to the interconnected fields of gender, cultural and technology studies.

Her sites of investigation are rich and varied, ranging from science fiction canon to her own personal experience with technology in the classroom. Rather than take for granted established paradigms and vocabularies for the analysis of technology and the interaction between/amongst bodies, discourse and online media, Enteen forges an innovative language that tackles nation, community and discourse. An essential read for a range of fields and disciplines, including queer studies, digital media studies, gender studies, critical race studies, post colonial studies and linguistics among others.

However, this book might not satisfy ones who are more interested in calculus and equations. In short, this is perfect for getting familiar with statistics and R.
