A revolutionary book--brace yourself!

Come and see a new intellectual baby! With this book, a new field is born: interpretation of literature from the perspective of a child's primal needs. Inventing the Child asserts two radical ideas: (1) that each work of literature reveals specific culturally sanctioned childhood violations of its author, and (2) that adultist ideology is necessarily propagated through literature, no matter how "great" that literature may be. J. Zornado has written an angry, impassioned, intellectually courageous book about childhood, literature, and adult blindness. His radical childhood studies perspective gives entirely new readings to Hamlet, Grimm's fairy tales, and Where the Wild Things Are, among other works. You don't have to agree with all his ideas--I don't agree with his second assertion above, if I understand it correctly--to be deeply impressed with what this book attempts and glad to embrace the new field it represents. Welcome to the world, Baby-as-yet-unnamed! (Radical childhood studies is not too catchy, but it will do for now.)

The Story of Childhood Revealed!

Inventing the Child is a book for every person. It is a masterpiece of insightful and passionate views on why our world has become the way it is(children killing one another etc.)...the ways that parents, culture and society tries to make children into what they think children should be. It helps to explain what is truly behind Walt Disney and his productions and why adults feel that they must dominate their children. It is a must read for anyone who has children of their own and for anyone who teaches children, it is also a must read for anyone who was invented as a child and is working through who they really are. J. Zornado has found and is helping the world to answer the question of why so much happens in our society that isn't "normal". Let us be so thankful he is teaching this to college students and to the world! I highly recommend this book to all!

Cultural Creation Discovered

This book will change your views on how to raise your kid and, in a deeper level, help understand the deadlock our society is in and how to try to break free of our habits of violence and destruction.
It analyzes the myths and books we feed our children and the subconscious message we hand to them everytime they go to a Disney movie or consume merchandising. It also explain the amount of violence they are directly subjeted too by unknowing and loving parents. Truly an eye opener.

Excellent Early Childhood Math Resource

If you want to develop an improved understanding on how young children learn mathematics, then this is the book. This is not test prep or rote learning, but introducing the big ideas of math to young children.

We started a study group of PreK, Kindergarten and First grade teachers at my school around this book. The book helps teachers understand what children know (which is generally more than we think), their capacity to understand the big ideas in math and how we can know what they know. It also helps us understand what is possible for children and the general development of mathematical ideas in several areas.

Educators interested in this should also look at [...] "The Building Blocks project created exemplary mathematics materials designed to enable all young children to meet the new preK-grade 2 standards developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics"

This information written for teachers and based on years of research lays out how children learn different strands of mathematics: counting, addition, subtraction, place value spatial thinking, geometry, and measurement. Understanding how children learn mathematics will have a significant effect on mathematics instruction and lead to greatly improved student achievement. A mathematics curriculum whose organization is based on these learning trajectories in the hands of quality teachers would make a huge positive difference in mathematics education.

Surviving the Holocaust is a compelling sociological account of two brothers who survived the Holocaust in Nazi-occupied Poland. One brother, the author’s father, endured several concentration camps, including the infamous camp at Auschwitz, as well as a horrific winter death march; while the other brother, the author’s uncle, survived outside the camps by passing as a Catholic among anti-Semitic Poles, including a group of anti-Nazi Polish Partisans, eventually becoming an officer in the Soviet army.

As an exemplary "theorized life history," Surviving the Holocaust applies concepts from life course theory to interpret the trajectories of the brothers’ lives, enhancing this approach with insights from agency-structure and collective memory theory. Challenging the conventional wisdom that survival was simply a matter of luck, it highlights the prewar experiences, agentive decision-making and risk-taking, and collective networks that helped the brothers elude the death grip of the Nazi regime. Surviving the Holocaust also shows how one family’s memory of the Holocaust is commingled with the memories of larger collectivities, including nations-states and their institutions, and how the memories of individual survivors are infused with collective symbolic meaning.

I loved this book. I want to read his other Holocaust books. I love that he can give stories from real people that lived through this time in history. You will need Kleenex's, but it is a humbling book.

Relevant no only to Latin America.

This book in its own right was an informative read. It is for me also, indirectly related to Caribbean (my main interest) economic but not political, development. More of an essay in history as opposed to a delivery of "Solutions Theory". An excellent read for the non-professional researcher, like myself.

For Academics

Critics of Jack Zipes on Amazon often fail to understand that he is not writing for a lay audience. His books are for serious academics -- folklorists, literary scholars, film theorists, etc. And, for those audiences, his work is absolutely indispensable. Zipes has done more for the theorization of folk and fairy tales than almost any other contemporary academic, and his name belongs in conversation with the likes of Alan Dundes, Maria Tatar, Linda Degh, et al. Unfortunately, from the reviews on Amazon it seems people are going in expecting Zipes to read more like Bettelheim, whose simplistic, reductive, and misleading interpretations of fairy tales have done more harm than good in the world of folklore scholarship.

As a folklorist interested in new historicist approaches to literature and film, I find Zipes' work to be canonical and useful for both my own research as well as for teaching undergraduates. My students have responded very strongly to both this book and "Breaking the Magic Spell," as well as select chapters from some of his other works. Zipes is definitely writing for a college level or above, but his prolific work has helped me provide my students with interesting and impactful introductions to difficult academic terrain (such as Marxism, feminism, ideology and inequality, media literacy, etc). The subject matter is familiar for students, which keeps them engaged as Zipes unpacks complex but essential social theory. Of all the books I teach with, students have told me they are most likely to hold on to Zipes at the end of the semester.

The Amazon reviews mostly reflect the experiences of people who were not prepared for the intellectual rigor of Zipes' work. This is not to say that Zipes doesn't deserve to be critiqued by other academics in his field (he does), but that the people who have written reviews of his works on Amazon seem to miss the point entirely. (Or maybe they just don't want to think about how Beauty and Beast is a classist, bourgeois fantasy designed to humanize the aristocracy in the eyes of an oppressed underclass before the French Revolution. After all, it IS much more comfortable to think that story is just an extension of the tepid 'appearances can be deceiving' theme).

If you are up for an intellectual read that challenges the way you think about stories you've known and loved (or hated) since childhood, then this book may be for you. If you want an easily-digestible and fun analysis of fairy tales that just reinforces what you already believe about them, look elsewhere.

Like lead clothing

This book had a lot to say, but I was hard pressed get through it. It was so filled with nominalizations and bloated sentences that it sounded pompous and full of itself. The sentences were weighty and boring, and ran on so long that I had a hard time figuring out what was happening inside that sentence.

An actual quote from this book: "It follows, then, out of necessity that we write our own texts to gain a sense not simply of what has happened in reality but also of what has happened on psychological, economic, cultural, and other levels to free ourselves of the dictates of the sociohistorical texts that have prescribed and ordered our thinking and need to be disordered if we are to perceive for ourselves the processes that produce social structures, modes of production, and cultural artifacts."

Writing media history is no longer a matter of charting the historical development of an individual medium such as film or television. Instead, now that various media from blockbuster films to everyday computer use intersect regularly via convergence, scholars must find new ways to write media history across multiple media formats. Janet Staiger is William P. Hobby Centennial Professor of Communication in the Department of Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin. The author of many books, her latest include Media Reception Studies, Blockbuster TV: Must-See Sitcoms in the Network Era, and Perverse Spectators: The Practices of Film Reception.

Sabine Hake is Professor and Texas Chair of German Literature and Culture at the University of Texas at Austin. She is the author of Topographies of Class: Urban Architecture and Mass Utopia in Weimar Berlin, German National Cinema, and Popular Cinema of the Third Reich, among many other books.
