Prevailing Eurocentric and North-American notions of childhood and development across the North-South boundaries show vast differences in how childhood is constructed and how development is theorized.

The World Yearbook of Education 2009 volume provides comprehensive research from Asia-Pacific, the Americas, the African region and European communities and is presented with a special focus on education. It examines childhood from birth to twelve years of age, across institutional contexts and within both poor majority and rich minority countries. Cultural-historical theory has been used as the framework for investigating and providing insights into how childhood is theorized, politicized, enacted, and lived across these communities. A range of theoretical orientations informs this book, including cultural-historical theory, ecological theory, and cross-cultural research.

Section 1: Examines the global construction of childhood development and learning

Section 2: Discusses the local conditions and global imperatives that arise from a broadly based analysis of the studies presented within this section

This book is a true educational manual for all chaplains who want to understand, learn, and be able to maneuver with excellence and sapience within the Hospice model and context of ministry. An excellent resource to have in your library to resort to when you need it and to polish up on subjects we need to master as professional chaplains to know our stuff and be able to have ownership when we talk, minister and teach others what excellent chaplaincy is all about when it is accompanied by this kind of cognizance and application. Get this book and you won't lack the professional tools that are needed to provide and excellent service as professional chaplains. MAA

This book is organized well and easy to read. It covers all aspects of Hospice and Palliative care, from business topics and issues to caring for the basic needs of patients and families. I bought it for a class I'm taking at Marian University in WI, in the Masters Thanatology program.

In this volume , author Victoria Sweet essays to describe who Hildegard von Bingen was. Was she actually completely cloistered? If not completely cloistered, how did she manage in an all-male Benedictine monastery to make the practical observation and gain the clinical practice to developed a successful medical practice?

Hildegard claimed she learned about the human body (male and female) and was successful at writing because of "visions". Were her claims of visions really migraines, or were they also an attempt by her and those women in her religious community to cloak a medical practice what would otherwise be forbidden a Benedictine Nun as the "life of a saint".

In her fascinating history, Sweet describes Hildegard as "politically astute" in the male-dominated medieval church to establish her own all-woman religious community in a separate monastery in which she grew and sustained her learning about the human body and it's afflictions. This study of von Bingen also proves that many of the natural remedies she used and understanding of how the human body works mirrored also many of the pre-modern medical concepts found in Chinese and Ayurvedic traditions.
