Grieving Beyond Gender: Understanding the Ways Men and Women Mourn, Revised Edition (Series in Death, Dying, and Bereavement), by Kenneth

Grieving Beyond Gender: Understanding the Ways Men and Women Mourn is a revision of  Men Don’t Cry, Women Do: Transcending Gender Stereotypes of Grief. In this work, Doka and Martin elaborate on their conceptual model of "styles or patterns of grieving" – a model that has generated both research and acceptance since the publication of the first edition in 1999. In that book, as well as in this revision, Doka and Martin explore the different ways that individuals grieve, noting that gender is only one factor that affects an individual’s style or pattern of grief. The book differentiates intuitive grievers, where the pattern is more affective, from instrumental grievers, who grieve in a more cognitive and behavioral way, while noting other patterns that might be more blended or dissonant. The model is firmly grounded in social science theory and research. A particular strength of the work is the emphasis placed on the clinical implications of the model on the ways that different types of grievers might best be supported through individual counseling or group support.

Review

"This book reminds us of the unique nature of the end of life and that one size does not fit all. It reminds us also of the highly complex, individual nature of grief." - Cruse Bereavement Care

"This new book offers a revised and expanded look at instrumental and intuitive grieving, and it makes for engaging, thought-provoking reading. Doka and Martin’s book represents a significant advance in thinking about bereavement, grief, and mourning. It offers that rare gift: a powerful conceptual framework for organizing one’s whole thinking about doing bereavement research and counseling the bereaved. The ideas of intuitive and instrumental grieving offer conceptual scaffolding both researchers and practitioners can understand and use to communicate with one another. This book contains possibilities for collaboration between researchers and practitioners to bridge the gap that separates them; even more important, it offers possibilities of working together as equals on projects of interest to both." - Death Studies, [35], 2011

"Grieving Beyond Gender is an important book that challenges widely accepted assumptions about grief... valuable reading not only for clinicians, grief counselors, hospice workers, and other professionals working with the bereaved, but also for graudate students in courses on death, dying, and aging." - Deborah Carr, Psychology of Women Quarterly

Thought-provoking...
By V. Lovelace
Kenneth J. Doka is highly distinguished in the field of death studies. He is a professor of gerontology at the College of New Rochelle's graduate school, New York, an ordained Lutheran minister, and a prolific writer (twenty-nine books and over one hundred book chapters and articles). He is editor of Omega: The Journal of Death and Dying, and of Journeys: A Newsletter to Help in Bereavement, and serves as a senior advisor to the Hospice Foundation of American (HFA). He is a past president of the Association of Death Education and Counseling (ADEC) and sits on the board of directors for the International Work Group on Dying, Death, and Bereavement (chairing from 1997-1999). He consults with numerous organizations concerned with the social, psychological, and biological aspects of caring for the aged and dying.

Terry L. Martin is associate professor of Psychology and Thanatology at Hood College, Frederick, Maryland, and the director for that school's Thanatology program. He is a Certified Grief Therapist, is also widely published, and consults with local hospices and nursing homes. In addition to teaching, he maintains a private practice focusing on dying and grief-related issues.

Grieving Beyond Gender: Understanding the Ways Men and Women Grieve is a revision of Doka and Martin's (2010) previous work, Men Don't Cry, Women Do: Transcending Gender Stereotypes of Grief, first published in 1999. Revised to provide more clarity and insight into the ways people grieve, the authors define grieving as an on-going internal process shaped by culture, personality, and gender during which the griever will experience their loss in very personal and unique ways, contending there is no one correct way to grieve. In fact, they cite numerous examples pointing to strong biases within the helping professions, primarily that unless one is expressing loss through expression of feelings, one is either in denial or at best, poorly coping. Early work in grief and bereavement focused on an assumption that there is a normal way to grieve, that getting through it involved an outward expression of feeling, and those whose expressions were otherwise must be in some kind of trouble--an approach highly disenfranchising to people termed instrumental grievers (those who have learned to function in a more cognitive and less affective way). Considered a "must-read" for those who work with men and adolescent boys, on-going research suggests patterns of grieving are strongly influenced by gender, but not determined by it--so it is equally disenfranchising to assume that all women or all men grieve in specific patterns. Written primarily for helping professionals who find themselves in contact with grief and bereavement in some form, the authors expand on their thought-provoking model, clearly pointing readers to the most critical component for developing a broader understanding of the grieving process: "Not only must we recognize what the mourner's needs are, we must be aware that not meeting them not only doesn't help, but actually hurts" (Doka & Martin, 2010, Kindle edition, Loc 210).

The book is neatly organized in building-block fashion, with the first section (five chapters) setting forth clear definitions of loss ("being deprived of or ceasing to have something that one formerly possessed or was attached to" (Loc 547)), bereavement (`a state in which something has been violently taken away" (Loc 604)), and grief:
Grief arises as a reaction to loss. Specifically, grief can be defined as the psychic energy that results from tension created by an individual's strong desire to

1. Maintain his or her assumptive world as it was before the loss
2. Accommodate to a newly emerging reality resulting from his or her loss
3. Incorporate this new reality into an emerging assumptive world (Loc 627)

Several illustrations help by highlighting feedback mechanisms involved in grieving and adapting within a looped system (thus debunking the myth that one must somehow get over or complete their grieving at some point and go on with life and matters of the living). Doka and Martin (2010) clarify that we continually adjust for the remainder of our lives to life events that impact us as loss. Discussion turns to the affect vs. intellect continuum, assigning the terms intuitive (those who tend to adapt through going with their emotions and generally have a greater need for social support) and instrumental (those who tend to adapt primarily through thinking and kinetic activity, generally not expressing or experiencing emotions other than anger), respectively, to flesh out ways people grieve in variations of these patterns. The final chapter in this section discusses dissonant patterns of grief--a "persistent way of expressing grief that is at odds with the griever's primary internal experience' (Loc 2012). A lack of harmony or congruence between the inner state and outer expression, if carried on long enough, can result in dissonance, or ineffective grieving, often resulting in complications.

Section two (three chapters) discusses the various ways personality (grounded in Jungian theory), gender role socialization, and cultural influences may shape patterns of grieving, and the final section of the book (three chapters) focuses on implications for helping professionals, strategies for intervention and self-help, and wraps up with a final chapter to summarize this important work. A grief pattern inventory tool is provided in the appendices and includes item analysis and scoring material.

This work is insightful, thought-provoking, and often prompted reflection on my own grief work (the life-long process of integrating and adapting to loss). Written in an easy style and peppered throughout with examples demonstrating the theory and model set forth, it has value for anyone in the helping professions involved in grief and bereavement work (clergy, social work, counselors, physicians, nurses, volunteers, even emergency services personnel). One reviewer found the authors tended to strongly identify intuitive with the feminine and instrumental with the masculine, and some discussions in the text are connected to references of men and women, all of which may suggest they have yet to get completely beyond gender (von Kellenbach, 2010). This review underscores the value of the work, but argues that maintaining a stance of separation or separate-but-equal styles of grieving pinned to gender identification does little to break down gender barriers and stereotypes, citing an overly simplistic approach to gender analysis in grieving.

In the final analysis, Doka and Martin (2010) do emphasize up front these concepts are particularly necessary for those working with men and adolescent boys and although they refer often to their position that gender influences but does not determine grieving style, it may be that scrapping gender references while discussing patterns and the model as they argue it will clear any confusion. The message more simply stated is not unclear: "...instrumental grievers have thinking as their superior function, whereas intuitive grievers have feeling as their superior function" (Loc 2500). That we grieve in patterns likely influenced by personality, gender role socialization, and culture along a continuum between feeling and thinking and that we may experience a variety of reactions impacting affect, cognition, behavior, and spiritual understanding can hardly be argued. Most importantly, the crux of the authors' message seems to be this: if we continue to hold to the obviously existing bias toward affect and so-called normal grief work, we certainly risk perpetuating gender and other death-and-dying-related myths, in the end unwittingly disenfranchising those we seek to assist.

Online Social Networking on Campus: Understanding What Matters in Student Culture, by Ana M. Martínez-Alemán, Katherine Lynk

In the era of such online spaces as Facebook, Instant Messenger, Live Journal, Blogger, Web Shots, and campus blogs, college students are using these resources and other online sites as a social medium. Inevitably, this medium presents students with ethical decisions about social propriety, self disclosure and acceptable behaviour. Because online social networking sites have proven problematic for college students and for college administrators, this book aims to offer professional guidance to Higher Education administrators and policy makers. Online Social Networking on Campus: Understanding what matters in student culture is a professional guide for Higher Education faculty and Student Affairs administrators, which rigorously examines college students’ use of online social networking sites and how they use these to develop relationships both on and off campus. Most importantly, Online Social Networking on Campus investigates how college students use online sites to explore and makes sense of their identities. Providing information taken from interviews, surveys and focus group data, the book presents an ethnographic view of social networking that will help Student Affairs administrators, Information Technology administrators, and faculty better understand and provide guidance to the "neomillennials" on their campuses.

Review

"An enlightening and challenging look at the ways in which students use social networking online to explore their individual and collective identities…Online Social Networking on Campus would be a wonderful text for a graduate seminar on contemporary issues in college student development or student affairs. The book would serve equally well as the centerpiece of a professional development reading group discussion. The authors are to be congratulated on their thoughtful and thought-provoking work, and you are encouraged to get involved in the conversation through picking up a copy of this book soon."--George S. McClellan, Journal of College Student Development, July/August 2009, Vol 50 No 4, 468-469

"This book will be useful for anyone with a specific interest in university students and their use of Facebook, or as an example of how to conduct a study of this nature". - Learning, Media and Technology, 35:1

"This book is one means of becoming more educated about the many ways in which students, and even administrators, can take advantage of Facebook to enhance the college student experience. It also provides a good resource for those who are unfamiliar with Facebook and the culture created online through this somewhat new and developing technology."―Review of Higher Education

A fascinating examination of how Americans think about and write about witches, from the 'real' witches tried and sometimes executed in early New England to modern re-imaginings of witches as pagan priestesses, comic-strip heroines and feminist icons.

The first half of the book is a thorough re-reading of the original documents describing witchcraft prosecutions from 1640-1700 and a re-thinking of these sources as far less coherent and trustworthy than most historians have considered them to be.

The second half of the book examines how these historical narratives have transformed into myths of witchcraft still current in American society, writing and visual culture. The discussion includes references to everything from Increase Mather and Edgar Allan Poe to Joss Whedon (the writer/director of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which includes a Wiccan character) and The Blair Witch Project.

Good book poorly cataloged
By Kaeli Vandertulip
Much can be learned about trends in American politics, religion, social movements, and even science by examining how we have viewed witchcraft in this country. Dr. Gibson is a British literature professor and researcher. She took up the task of examining various aspects of witchcraft in America. Naturally, the events in Salem, MA are examined, but so are the different ways it has been portrayed and explained-whether as a statement about feminism, racism, science, or patriotism-and what it says about the culture at the time those theories were presented. She also examines the various ways witches are portrayed in popular culture: witches in TV shows like Bewitched or Charmed, Wiccans in the media from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to The Blair Witch Project, or "witch hunts" portrayed in the Crucible.

Though this book is hardly a page-turner, it is a valuable read for anyone interested in witchcraft history, the history of Wicca in America, or looking for one aspect of pop culture's mirroring of mores and social expectations. It is not a primer on the practice of witchcraft, nor does it promote or denigrate aspects of it. It is not intended to provide a definitive history on the topic of witchcraft, but to be a mirror on what history has said about it.

And just a side beef with this-it's put in the BF section based on Library of Congress classification, which is all wrong. That's where books on the occult go. This is not a book about the occult-you won't find spells or instructions on how to call corners or thoughts about spirituality at all. It is a book about how we as a nation have historically viewed contemporary and historical accounts of occult happenings. It belongs in the E section, in history.

Emotions, Genre, Justice in Film and Television: Detecting Feeling (Routledge Research in Cultural and Media Studies), by Deidre Pribram

Popular film and television are ideally suited in understanding how emotions create culturally shared meanings. Yet very little has been done in this area. Emotion, Genre, and Justice in Film and Television explores textual representations of emotions from a cultural perspective, rather than in biological or psychological terms. It considers emotions as structures of feeling that are collectively shared and historically developed.

Through their cultural meanings and uses, emotions enable social identities to be created and contested, to become fixed or alter. Popular narratives often take on emotional significance, aiding groups of people in recognizing or expressing what they feel and who they are. This book focuses on the justice genres – the generic network of film and television programs that are concerned with crime, law, and social order – to examine how fictional police, detective, and legal stories participate in collectively realized conceptions of emotion. A range of films (Crash, Man on Fire) and television series (Cold Case,Cagney and Lacey) serve as case studies to explore contemporarily relevant representations of anger, fear, loss and consolation, and compassion.

Review

‘E. Deidre Pribram’s well-written and engaging work is a return to the traditional Cultural Studies way of doing representational research and is perhaps surprisingly to some predominantly a refreshing read. Emotions, Genre, Justice in Film and Television: Detecting Feeling is at first glance a return to a well-tread perspective, but it could also potentially be the start of a new cinema research focus on justice and emotion on a much larger scale.’ – Helle Kannik Haastrup, MedieKultur

Review

"Erudite, though also readable; comprehensive, though also manageable; somber, and yet also, in the final analysis, hopeful, this collection of original essays warrants all possible readership―now and for much time to come." --Arthur B. Shostak, The European Legacy: Towards New Paradigms, Vol. 17, 4, June 2012

"I have used this book as the basic text in my courses on genocide since its first edition.  It is written by the foremost experts on the major genocides of the twentieth century and, in the new edition, the twenty-first. Most importantly, its first-hand accounts by eye-witnesses expose the personal side of genocide, the most depersonalizing crime against humanity. The stories it tells are unforgettable." --Dr. Gregory H. Stanton, President, International Association of Genocide Scholars

"The third edition of Century of Genocide provides valuable comparative perspectives of colonial, political, and ideological mass killing from the Herero and Armenian cases in the early twentieth century to Rwanda and Darfur at the end of the century and into the next. It is compelling both as an overarching general survey that includes first-person testimony and as a call for effective measures to prevent and deal with the scourge of genocide and crimes against humanity." --Richard G. Hovannisian, Professor of History and Chair in Modern Armenian History, University of California, Los Angeles

"This is an important, comprehensive, and at times urgent account of modern genocide. The geographical and historical breadth of cases as well as the combining of thoughtful analysis and powerful eyewitness accounts make this book a very valuable contribution for scholars and students alike." --Scott Straus, Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Wisconsin, Madison

In-depth analysis and personal accounts of genocide.
By Lauren
I bought this book for a class on Genocide. I like the way that the text is structured so that it is easy to ascertain who, what, when, where, and why. The personal accounts at the end of each chapter are incredibly moving and bring a human face to the atrocities committed in each case. I also enjoyed that the author includes politicides and killing of perceived socio-economic classes as genocides. This is an educational book that you don't have to be in a class to enjoy and benefit from.

Best book on genocide
By Carl Skutsch
I teach a class on genocide and this is the best book I've found to cover 20th century genocides. I've looked closely at the others and I wasn't satisfied. One of the strengths of this book is that each chapter is written by a different author, an expert in his or her field. This is also one of the book's weakness: some of the writers are on the dry and weak side. My students have found some of the chapters a bit heavy going. On the up side (if there is an up side in a book on genocide!) each chapter end with very moving first person accounts of genocide victims. These more than make up for the dry prose that came before. The book covers all the major (and some not so major) genocides of the 20th century. It's sad that there are so many.

Getting a Wide Scope on the Greatest of Crimes
By Eric Maroney
Genocide in the Twentieth Century: Critical Essays and Eyewitness Accounts is a fitting title for this collection, since genocide is one of the salient, dominating features of the twentieth century. Certainly, there were attempts be one group of people to eradicate the existence of another, but in the last century industrialization and mobilization allowed this to occur on a vast, unprecedented scale.

This book grapples with the term genocide, trying to find a firm meaning for the act, and settling on a pretty wide view. It covers the genocide of the Hereros people in Africa under the Germans at the turn of the twentieth century, the Armenian Genocide, the Soviet man made genocide in the Ukraine in the years between the wars, the Genocide of the Jews, Gypsies, and disabled people during the Second World War.

After the war years, it turns to other areas: The Indonesian Massacres in the 1960s, the Genocide in East Timor, Bangladesh in the early 1970s, Burundi, Cambodia, and of indigenous people the world over. The book was published in 1995, so the genocide of Bosnian Muslims is not a part of this collection.

Each section is an academic, historical investigation of an incident of Genocide, followed by eyewitness testimony. The book, in keeping with its stated mission, explores some of the motivations for genocide, and what can be done to prevent them.

Teaching and Learning Proof Across the Grades: A K-16 Perspective (Studies in Mathematical Thinking and Learning Series)From Routledge

A Co-Publication of Routledge for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)

In recent years there has been increased interest in the nature and role of proof in mathematics education; with many mathematics educators advocating that proof should be a central part of the mathematics education of students at all grade levels. This important new collection provides that much-needed forum for mathematics educators to articulate a connected K-16 "story" of proof. Such a story includes understanding how the forms of proof, including the nature of argumentation and justification as well as what counts as proof, evolve chronologically and cognitively and how curricula and instruction can support the development of students’ understanding of proof. Collectively these essays inform educators and researchers at different grade levels about the teaching and learning of proof at each level and, thus, help advance the design of further empirical and theoretical work in this area. By building and extending on existing research and by allowing a variety of voices from the field to be heard, Teaching and Learning Proof Across the Grades not only highlights the main ideas that have recently emerged on proof research, but also defines an agenda for future study.

Interesting, if dated, academic counterpoint
By G70
I first read Don't Bet on the Prince roughly 20 years ago, and recently went searching for my copy (apparently loaned or lost). I bought a replacement copy and came to the realization that a lot has changed in 20 years.

My intent this time was to have some stories to read to my daughters that offered a counterpoint to the traditional/Grimm/Disney imaging of women in general and princesses in particular. Some of the stories are well above the elementary or middle school levels, while some others are appropriate as stories for children. Zipes acknowledges this by segmenting the stories into two groups, one for the young, and the other for the young at heart. Most are referential, though, in the sense that strong familiarity with the traditional tales make these more interesting. An additional section of feminist literary criticism follows.

To the end of stories for kids, I very much like "The Princess Who Stood on Her Own Two Feet," and "Prince Amilec." That said, there are most likely better anthologies of stories for children. As a bit of critical text, it certainly represents a step in the progression of feminist theory, just not the current one.

With contributions from an international group of leading thinkers in the OM research field, the book covers those methods frequently used in studies of OM as well as adjacent applied management areas such as management of innovation and R&D, logistics, and supply chain management. Included are chapters on surveys, case studies, action research, longitudinal field studies, and models and simulations together with chapters on planning, positioning, assessing, and publishing research. First Do No Harm: The Paradoxical Encounters of Psychoanalysis, Warmaking, and Resistance (Relational Perspectives Book Series)From Rout

At the outset of World War I - the "Great War" - Freud supported the Austro-Hungarian Empire for which his sons fought. But the cruel truths of that bloody conflict, wrought on the psyches as much as the bodies of the soldiers returning from the battlefield, caused him to rethink his stance and subsequently affected his theory: Psychoanalysis, a healing science, could tell us much about both the drive for war and the ways to undo the trauma that war inherently breeds, but its principles could just as easily serve the enemy's desires to inculcate its own brand of "truth."

Even a century later, psychoanalysis can still be used as much for the justifications of warfare and propaganda as it is for the defiance of and resistance to those same things. But it is in the investigation of the motives and methods behind these uses that psychoanalysis proves its greatest strength. To wit, this edited collection presents published and unpublished material by analysts, writers, and activists who have worked at the front lines of psychic life and war from various stances. Set at a point of tension and contradiction, they illustrate the paradoxical relation of psychoanalysis as both a site of resistance and healing and a necessary aspect of warmaking, propaganda, and militarism. In doing so, we venture from the home front - from the trauma of returning veterans to the APA's own complicity in CIA "black sites" - across international borders - from the treatment of women in Latin American dictatorships to the resistance to occupation in Palestine, from mind control to an ethics of responsibility. Throughout, a psychoanalytic sensibility deconstructs the very opposition that it inhabits, and seeks to reestablish psychoanalysis as the healing discipline it was conceived to be.

Review

"Psychologists wield tremendous power, from the sanctity of the therapist's couch to the cold, hard, dark reality of the CIA's secret prisons. Facing a professional leadership embedded with the Bush administration and the Pentagon, a small group of dedicated psychologists mounted a disciplined campaign to put an end to the torture that was being conducted with the support and participation of their peers. As this volume documents, the struggle to reform the American Psychological Association is a story of grassroots organizing against tremendous institutional power, to force their profession to abide by the ancient imperative to 'first do no harm.' The courageous efforts of these psychologists, described herein along with the overarching role of psychology in war and its aftereffects, bring to mind the lines of Mario Savio, launching the Free Speech Movement at UC-Berkeley in 1964: 'There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious - makes you sick at heart - that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all.'" - Amy Goodman, host and executive producer, Democracy Now!

"This collection holds its own among edited volumes that address the Bush White House decision to use torture. Because of its specificity to psychology, historical scope, and utilization of contemporary psychoanalysis, it warrants a wide readership. I recommend it to anyone who takes seriously trauma as a psychological condition and the place of ethics within psychology, as well as to those with interest in contemporary psychoanalysis." - Louis Rothschild, PhD., in PsycCRITIQUES

Thought-provoking essays
By Anne R.
The title of this book may make it difficult for readers to get a sense of what it's about. It's a collection of essays addressing a variety of topics including the participation of psychologists and the complicity of the APA in the Bush regime's "enhanced interrogation" efforts (and the resulting backlash from many of the organization's members), issues in doing psychotherapy with veterans, the intersection of psychoanalytic theory with social conscience and activism, reflections on identity and activism, and more. It's a thought-provoking collection for any psychotherapist who is interested in the political and social issues of our time. The various authors write in different styles and from somewhat different perspectives, giving the book an eclectic feel. It's surprising that there aren't more books that address the intersections of theory, practice and the greater social and political sphere in which we live and work.

A Rich, Informative and Timely Book
By C. Christian
This book is a fascinatingly rich collection of essays that, from different angles, help us more clearly understand the involvement of the American Psychological Association with the CIA in a system of harsh interrogations of detainees. This involvement violated a basic principle in the APA code of ethics of beneficence and nonmaleficence - that is to benefit those with whom psychologists work and take care to do no harm. Despite the claim made by some that psychologists' role in US interrogation sites was by way of ensuring that interrogation techniques were implemented safely, what the book makes clear is that psychologists played a critical role in the actual design of abusive techniques. The essays raise the important question of whether psychologists and especially psychoanalysts can remain outside of the arena of political debate in times of social crisis or when ethical principles of the profession are endangered. I use the book as part of a case study in a graduate course on ethics taught at the New School for Social Research.
