Young Citizens of the World: Teaching Elementary Social Studies Through Civic Engagement, by Marilynne Boyle-Baise, Jack Zevin

  • What really counts as social studies?
  • What does good social studies teaching look like?

Young Citizens of the World takes a clear stance: Social studies is about citizenship education that is informed, deliberative, and activist - citizenship not only as a noun, something one studies, but as a verb, something one DOES. The holistic, multicultural approach is based on this clear curricular and pedagogical purpose.

Straightforward, engaging, and highly interactive, the text lays out a three-part process for civic preparation that helps students understand their world and their place, as citizens, in it: becoming informed, thinking it through, and taking action. Six outstanding teaching strategies bring this framework to life. Each chapter is written as a civic engagement. Teaching/learning projects throughout are invitations to learn through intensive, integrated meaningful studies of special places, important people, and significant times. These civic engagements are teacher-ready for use in elementary classrooms. Readers are encouraged to rehearse the projects in their social studies education courses and then to reinterpret them for their classrooms.

Providing a powerful alternative to the Expanding Horizons social studies curriculum, this text is a compelling choice for elementary social studies education courses, as well as for practicing teachers who wish to enhance their social studies instruction.

Invaluable resource
By Beth Keller
Laura Wright's study is an interdisciplinary examination - combining ethical, postcolonial, performance, gender-based, and environmental theory - of the ways that 2003 Nobel Prize winning South African novelist J. M. Coetzee, primarily through his voicing of a female subject position and his presentation of a voiceless subjectivity, the animal, displaces both the narrative and authorial voice in his works of fiction. Coetzee's work remains outside of conventional notions of genre by virtue of the free indirect discourse that characterizes many of his third-person narrated texts that feature male protagonists (Life & Times of Michael K, The Master of Petersburg, and Disgrace), various and differing first-person narrative accounts of the same story (Dusklands, In the Heart of the Country), the use of female narrators and female narrative personas (Age of Iron, The Lives of Animals), and unlocatable, ahistorical contexts (Waiting for the Barbarians). She argues that via such displacement Coetzee writes dialogically, in the Bahktinian sense, as an author whose work performs various positions rather than maintains an internal, controlling, and monologic subjectivity. Therefore, Coetzee's texts, like his character of Michael K, position themselves "out of all the camps at the same time." Such destabilization opens up a space for my examination of the metafictional and postmodern nature of Coetzee's writing as performative narratives that allow for interplay between character, audience, and author. If there is any unifying aspect of Coetzee's writing, she argues, it is his relentless examination - and his characters' continuous pursuit - of imagined identification with the other, in the form of not only the black characters who are often silent in his texts and the white women who often narrate, but also in the form of animals, an issue he pursues most overtly in is 1997-98 Princeton Tanner Lectures, The Lives of Animals.

Review

"The Feminist Theory Reader brings together a sterling collection of essays that address fundamental issues in gender studies. The anthology draws from both classic articles such as those of Butler, Hill Collins, Anzaldua and Lorde and more recently published works. A "must have" text for present and future generation of scholars, activists, students and, of course, a combination of any of these."

―Alma M. Garcia, Sociology, Santa Clara University

"At last an anthology that does not embody a mythical universal woman or make us choose between the local and global, between theory and practice, between academia and grassroots social movements. This is a wonderful classroom tool with which to theorize feminism into its global futures."

―Banu Subramaniam, Women’s Studies, University of Massachusetts, Amherst

"The first edition of Feminist Theory Reader challenged readers to think about the meanings of difference in both local and global contexts, and the second edition further challenges readers to rethink current multiracial, transnational feminist theories about globalization, citizenship, and identity. This excellent anthology will be invaluable for courses in gender and women’s studies."

―Jae Kyung Lee, Women’s Studies, Ewha Womans University, South Korea

A Really Fascinating Read
By Stephanierunsforfun
This book is a fantastic resource for anyone interested in feminist perspectives. It is a compilation of feminist voices and perspectives on a variety of topics that span space and time. The book offers a global perspective on various feminist theories and practices with distinct sections on different time periods, local politics, identity, epistemology, the body and solidarity. It encompasses voices as varied as the Combahee River Collective, radical queer theorists and liberal feminists and incorporates various forms of writing from essays to personal narratives and poems.

Everyone should own this book. All will benefit and learn.
By Helvis
I am still in the process of reading this book. It provides a strong intellectual challenge as well as a broad introduction to the diverse field of feminism.

This is a wonderful way to expose a reader to various philosophies of feminism. It is safe to say the exposure is wide but not deep. But one will find many avenues to explore more deeply. Plus, the references to each chapter provide a ready made list for future reading.

In my case I was exposed to certain feminist thought that I otherwise would've chosen to avoid.
As a result I found out I am a radical feminist (i.e. I am to the left of Gloria Steinem).
Who knew?

This is good for anyone wanting a very strong introduction to feminism or those wanting to expand their knowledge base of what Feminism has to offer.

Everyone should read this book especially young men and women moving into adulthood.

Information Worlds: Social Context, Technology, and Information Behavior in the Age of the Internet, by Paul T. Jaeger, Gary Burnett

The authors present a multi-level theory of "Information Worlds" to investigate the ways in which information creates the social worlds of people. Building upon the foundational works of Library and Information Studies (LIS) scholar and theorist Elfreda Chatman and philosopher Jurgen Habermas, as well as from theory and research from a wide range of other fields, the theory of information worlds can serve as a theoretical driver both in LIS studies and across other disciplines that study information issues, enriching and expanding our understanding of the multi-layered role of information in society.

Testing their theory through application to a variety of real-world issues, Burnett and Jaeger tackle the topics of libraries and information provision, the value assigned to information by differing social groups, information access and exchange, international information policies, the role of information in democracy, and technological change. Information Worlds provides a framework for empirical investigations into the fascinating and very real social dimensions of information.

The Family in English Children's Literature (Children's Literature and Culture), by Ann Alston

From the trials of families experiencing divorce, as in Anne Fine’s Madame Doubtfire, to the childcare problems highlighted in Jacqueline Wilson’s Tracy Beaker, it might seem that the traditional family and the ideals that accompany it have long vanished. However, in The Family in English Children’s Literature, Ann Alston argues that this is far from the case. She suggests that despite the tales of family woe portrayed in children’s literature, the desire for the happy, contented nuclear family remains inherent within the ideological subtexts of children’s literature. Using 1818 as a starting point, Alston investigates families in children’s literature at their most intimate, focusing on how they share their spaces, their ideals of home, and even on what they eat for dinner. What emerges from Alston’s study are not so much the contrasts that exist between periods, but rather the startling similarities of the ideology of family intrinsic to children’s literature. The Family in English Children’s Literature sheds light on who maintains control, who behaves, and how significant children’s literature is in shaping our ideas about what makes a family "good."

Real children read children's books!
By Joy Manne
The Family in English Children's Literature by Ann Alston

This is a most curious and unsatisfactory book. Its thesis is that wicked children's authors perpetuate the ideal of family in order to control children and socialise them. The author never, ever, even once, considers that children choose what they read. Any teacher could tell her that it is difficult, if not impossible, to get children to read what they don't like. Any child could tell her, if she asked a real live one. Children are real. They exist and are articulate. They write Amazon reviews.

Children are real. They are alive. They have individual characters. This book treats them as if they were robots to be programmed by (the author's concept of) children's writers to uphold conventional social values - Do these really exist today? - and the nuclear family.

Children's writers are real. Each has their own life experiences on which they draw. Children's writers today are subversive. They write to empower children, to offer them resources in a difficult world, not to control them or to support a conventional society - whatever that is today.

As an example of the superficiality of this book, the author has no understanding of stories about a journey, a very frequent theme in all literature, not only children's. These stories take children out of their family, put them through trials and adventures, and then bring them home. The author criticises these books because they bring children home. In her understanding, this part of the children's author's plot to socialise them. She has no insight into the metaphor involved. When books about a journey bring children "home," they first bring them home to themselves enriched by the deeper authenticity and greater empowerment they have gained through their adventures. This is what they bring home to their original family. This is what has changed the children and will change the family. The children come home enriched through having surmounted dangers. They have acquired new and better resources including more skilful coping strategies. And these new attainments are to be used in their home because children live in homes, and because story demands that a journey end where it began.

This author has no understanding of Story. Story is real. Story makes its own demands. Plots have to be interesting and endings have to be satisfactory otherwise stories don't get read. A story demands its own appropriate ending. This author should study The Seven Basic Plots by Christopher Booker. Then she should take a course in writing stories for children. And then she'll get closer to understanding what she wants to write about.

Everybody's America: Thomas Pynchon, Race, and the Cultures of Postmodernism (Studies in Major Literary Authors), by David Witzling

Everybody’s America reassesses Pynchon’s literary career in order to explain the central role played by the racialization of American culture in the postmodernist deconstruction of subjectivity and literary authority and in the crisis in white liberal culture. It charts the evolution of both these cultural transformations from Pynchon’s early short stories, composed in the late 1950s, through Gravity’s Rainbow, published in 1973. This book demonstrates that Pynchon deploys techniques associated with the decentering of the linguistic sign and the fragmentation of narrative in order to work through the anxieties of white male subjects in their encounter with racial otherness. It also charts Pynchon’s attention to non-white and non-Euro-American voices and cultural forms, which imply an awareness of and interest in processes of transculturation occurring both within U.S. borders and between the U.S. and the Third World. In these ways, his novels attempt to acknowledge the implicit racism in many elements of white American culture and to grapple with the psychological and sociopolitical effects of that racism on both white and black Americans. The argument of Everybody’s America, however, also considers the limits of Pynchon’s implicit commitment to hybridity as a social ideal, identifying attitudes expressed in his work that suggest a residual attraction to the mainstream liberalism of the fifties and early sixties. Pynchon’s fiction dramatizes the conflict between the discourses and values of such liberalism and those of an emergent multiculturalist ethos that names and valorizes social difference and hybridity. In identifying the competition between residual liberalism and an emergent multiculturalism, Everybody’s America makes its contribution to the broader understanding of postmodern culture.

Review
"Witzling reads texts well, but his special contribution lies in his grasp of contemporary theory and those conundrums of race in which the younger Pynchon's imagination was anchored in the 1950s and 1960s...this is an original contribution to knowledge of Pynchon and the role of race in American culture." The best comprehensive (or at least almost) feature writing textbook
By Dane S. Claussen
A very thorough book throughout, with a lot of examples and insights from very good and excellent feature writers. The only suggestions I would make would be to add a chapter on business feature stories, a chapter on sports feature stories, and a chapter on history feature stories. A few pages could be cut out of other chapters to make room.

Food and Culture: A Reader, 2nd EditionFrom Routledge

Food touches everything important to people: it marks social difference and strengthens social bonds. Common to all people, it can signify very different things from table to table.

Food and Culture takes a global look at the social, symbolic, and political-economic role of food. The stellar contributors to this reader examine some of the meanings of food and eating across cultures, with particular attention to how men and women define themselves differently through their foodways. Crossing many subjects, this innovative, first-of-its-kind in the field includes the perspectives of anthropology, history, psychology, philosophy, politics, and sociology. This is the classic text in the field, updated for the first time in a decade, and hailed as the "bible" in the field. A must use for any course on the anthropology or sociology of food. Review

"I get asked all the time to define Food Studies, and now I have the answer. Read this book. This is a brilliantly selected compilation of the most riveting and entertaining writing on food and culture, ranging from the classic to the post-modern. The range of topics is astounding, and the writing is terrific. Read any of these pieces and you will want to read everything else that author wrote. Anyone reading this book will understand immediately why the study of food teaches us so much about our society, now and in the past." -Marion Nestle, Department of Nutrition, Food Studies and Public Health, New York University

"Inside view" of book deceiving!
By food justice student
BEWARE false advertising! I designed a college course/independent study for myself using this book and several others as the basis for the curriculum. Because the course description and bibliography were due before the book was scheduled to arrive, I used Amazon's "Look Inside" tool to check out the Table of Contents and get specifics on the book. The book arrived today, and the essays contained within it are very much different from the ones listed in the Table of Contents that I viewed. When you view the table of contents via "Look Inside", there is a warning that says: "Just so you know...This view is of the Hardcover edition (1997) from Routledge. The Paperback edition (2007) from Routledge that you originally viewed is the one you'll receive if you click the Add to Cart button at left." What the warning doesn't specify is that the paperback version you will receive actually contains some of the same but mostly many different essays than the ones shown in the "Look Inside." There are many essays I had planned to use in my studies that are not included in the version I received at all. Sorry Amazon, but I'm really disappointed in you on this one. It sounded like the only difference was that I'd be receiving the 2007 paperback version instead of the 1997 hardcover version. If the content of the book is different, I call it false advertising not to inform the customer of that very important detail prior to ordering.

A wealth of information on food culture issues
By Joshua P. OConner
As a broad review of food culture from a sociological/anthropological perspective, "Food and Culture" provides an excellent starting point. At over 600 pages with 36 articles on a wide variety of food issues, editors Carole Counihan and Penny Van Esterik have compiled a resource that represents major topics on the subject. Essays are categorized under four major subject headings including "Foundations", "Gender and Consumption", "Food and Identity Politics", and "Political Economy of Food".

The essays are written by well-established authors, who provide a wealth of insight into their areas of expertise. The essays are in-depth and dig deep into the heart of each issue. Counihan and Esterik have done an excellent job of revising the text through adding further material in the second edition.

While I found the book to be immensely helpful, I would not recommend it to someone just starting their studies of food culture. The articles assume a well-rounded understanding of sociological principles and can be a bit overwhelming the first time through. I read the book as part of a sociology "Food and Culture" class and at times found myself having to reread articles in order to extract the full meaning. The reader contributed greatly to my understanding and provided a basis for further research, but I found myself struggling through sometimes tedious and lengthy articles.

I would recommend this reader to anyone looking to expand their sociological knowledge or as a text in an advance sociology course. It is a great value for the number of articles that it features and the array of issues that it covers. I plan to keep the reader as a reference book and to review as I encounter food culture issues in the future.

This collection explores the relationship between digital gaming and its cultural context by focusing on the burgeoning Asia-Pacific region. Encompassing key locations for global gaming production and consumption such as Japan, China, and South Korea, as well as increasingly significant sites including Australia and Singapore, the region provides a wealth of divergent examples of the role of gaming as a socio-cultural phenomenon. Drawing from micro ethnographic studies of specific games and gaming locales to macro political economy analyses of techno-nationalisms and trans-cultural flows, this collection provides an interdisciplinary model for thinking through the politics of gaming production, representation, and consumption in the region.
