A note of caution

This book is really short considering the length of time it covers & when you read it you'll see why. Perhaps she figures her readers have a background in medieval history. I don't, so the material goes by so quickly it's hard to grasp all the details. However, the biggest drawback is that she quotes at length but never cites her sources! I use these histories as a springboard for going back & reading the primary sources. Wonderful quotes in the book, but I'll never know what works she's quoting!

Excellent book, but really marked up as seller said it might be

This is an excellent book, and written without either pretense or the academic arrogance and bloated obfuscation that accompanies so many books today. Good deal used, though *really* marked up, as the seller implied it might be. There are lines and notes on almost every page.

Good basics on US government

You can tell Cal Jillson tries his best to present an unbiased view of the US government in this textbook. He mostly succeeds, but his bias is exposed at points in the book. Many chapters end with a suggestion for reforming the government, and many of these involve continuing down a progressive course. Additionally, he insists on calling the US a democracy, even after stating we were founded as a federated representative republic. This is a bit misleading, as far as I know no constitutional changes have taken place since 1788 to have changed our system of government into a democracy, but that doesn't stop the author from insisting on it. The US "democracy" is often compared to other governments in Europe, which are structured quite differently, usually showing how much "better" they are at certain social issues, such as voting (in this chapter the author advocates for mandatory voter registration).

I have, overall though, found this textbook an enjoyable read. I have taken the initiative and read through most of it before my US Government class (POS 2041 here in Florida) even began. Most of the historical perspectives are non-biased. As this is an earlier version, the huge tea party uprising and all of the potential social effects on the future of government due to it is not covered here (I hope it is in his newest edition).

An Interesting Approach to Political Science

Most people will purchase this book because it is a required textbook for an American Government or Political Science class in college. However, this book makes an interesting read for those who just want to know more about their political and governmental system here in the United States.

The author takes a nice approach at teaching the different subjects throughout the book by using real world examples. There are a number of asides where the author spends one page telling the reader about a particular issue, event, or process and then asking the reader some challenge questions to make you think and learn the material.

In all this is a nice book. The price is not horrible for a textbook and the author does a good job of keeping the material interesting. I think anyone who gets this book will be pleased with the material and the manner in which it is presented. I would definitely suggest purchasing this book.

Kindle version for iPhone is incomplete

This book is very interesting. I am on chapter 2 as I write this and I have really enjoyed learning how our country formed. The only problem is that the formatting for the Kindle iPhone and iPad apps is really horrible. There are large gaps between pages and paragraphs end abruptly. The next paragraph starts and I can tell that the end of the paragraph is missing. Since I am reading this for a class - I'm concerned I'm missing out on important info and wanted to make sure this error was pointed out for others. Might be better to purchase the hard copy.

The Best Introduction to Political Psychology

Houghton's work is easily the best introductory book dealing with political psychology. The book is intended for an advanced undergraduate level audience. Unlike the other major books on this subject, Houghton does not insult the readers intelligence with an overuse of graphs and pictures, but rather provides the student with a thorough and overarching understanding of the primary approaches to the field.

If you are a science teacher with any ELL students in your classes, then this book is for you. It offers clear guidelines and suggestions to help your instruction and your students. I am using it with my classes of 100% ELL students and for a workshop series that I am co-teaching for non-Native English speakers.

THE Pinocchio Study Has Arrived!

Finally - a comprehensive analysis and history of one of the most important children's books! If you think you know Pinocchio, think again. Pinocchio Goes Postmodern is THE exhaustive study of the great literary puppet. From Carlo Collodi's (pen name for Carlo Lorenzini) original late 19th century tale to its many 20th and 21st century spin-offs, from the original's illustrations to its inspired copies, to Disney's version and beyond, Pinocchio Goes Postmodern enlightens with its expansive chronicling of the fabled Pinocchio story in its myriad manifestations.

Wunderlich and Morrissey are, in my estimation, the world's preeminent Pinocchio scholars. (Hollywood and Global Cinema take note: If you are going to tackle a celluloid rendition of this tale - animated or otherwise - you need this team aboard as consultants.) The former is a professor of sociology at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, the latter, a professor of English at SUNY Plattsburgh. Wunderlich had already written a Pinocchio Bibliography before tackling this endeavor. Morrissey has written at least one Pinocchio-inspired play. Both have written many articles and given many talks on the subject for over twenty years. Pinocchio Goes Postmodern benefits from these scholars, not only because of their seemingly exhaustive knowledge about Collodi, Pinocchio and their literary children but because they are able to approach the material from both sociological and literary vantage points.
The text provides an overview of creator Collodi's life and work prior to Pinocchio, as well as a publication history of the original. Later chapters expand on the publication history of Pinocchio and trace the manner in which Collodi's story has been re-told, appropriated, outright stolen, bastardized, rescued and recovered by a plethora of storytellers. The best of these amalgamations capture the true spirit of the original tale and continue to make it both a learning experience in the context of amusing storytelling. The best of the Pinocchio spin-offs also continue to focus on the growth of the "I-ness" (to borrow Robert Coover's terminology from his adult sequel, Pinocchio In Venice) within the principal character. In spite of its detractors and countless rip-off artists, Collodi's original Pinocchio tale is a beautiful children's bildungsroman that does not shirk from strong lessons. Disney probably did the most damage in terms of turning Pinocchio into a cutesy children's tale. (Moreover, the sociological and moral lessons imbedded in the Disney version are skewed. For example, nobody is economically destitute in the Disney (World) view and if you disobey your parents and guardian angels - even if they look like crickets - you're going to wind up a demon-like, gambling, heathen. Period.) Although Collodi probably kept adults in mind as he was penning his book, his text is unquestionably first and foremost a children's story. The author made sure his story remained focused on depicting sincere versions of the tough trails - and trials - children must travel on their journey to adulthood. Why there have been countless watered down retellings of the story may best be summed up by an overview of our postmodern culture: our obsession with keeping things light and easy, our manic infatuation with consumerism, our attempt to turn life into one long visit to Pleasure Island. Most damaging of all, perhaps, is a turning away from the importance of cultivating an intimate knowledge and ongoing study of the self. Self-study is not narcissistic behavior, but necessary in order to gain authenticity in a largely inauthentic and superficial world.
Pinocchio Goes Postmodern is not only a fun book to read, it's a tremendous reference tool that belongs in the library (public and private) of anyone concerned with the history of great children's literature and great texts in general. Wunderlich and Morrissey present their material in an accessible, friendly style. Because of the dumbing down of the Pinocchio story in the U.S. since the late 1930's, augmented by the continuing dominance of the Disney version, modern American readers, child and adult, are missing out on an important reading experience popularly enjoyed during the first four decades of the 20th century. The Wunderlich/Morrisey book describes and analyzes the former richness and ubiquity, and the subsequent adulteration, of the original Pinocchio version in America.
This book belongs in the library of every academic institution where literary and cultural studies are important. It should also be accessible in public libraries to enable parents and teachers to discover, or rediscover, a rollicking and many-layered story to share with children.

Virtue ethics grounded in psychology

Some readers might be disappointed that Nancy Snow's book doesn't provide a complete account of virtue. We are never told exactly what aspects of social intelligence counts as virtues since vices are also grounded in social intelligence.

What this book does do quite well is show how a philosophically viable account of virtue ethics could be made consistent with the available empirical evidence. Situationism, which denies that there are any "global" character traits that could could as virtues, overlooks ways to interpret the evidence in ways consistent with the existence of virtues. Snow's interpretations, I think, are quite plausible and far more in keeping with common sense than those of the situationists.

The points in this book are well made, but I came hoping to find a complete account of virtues here. For that, we may need to wait for a follow-up.
