Ground-breaking, Comprehensive Work

Adrian Lewis's "The American Culture of War: The History of U.S. Military Force from World War II to Operation Iraqi Freedom " is an excellent history and study of American war-making since World War II. Lewis highlights the American approach to war, how this approach is a product of American culture, and how our new approach to war has failed since the middle of the twentieth century.

The American way of war, as others have pointed out before Lewis, was focused on a citizen-Army, conscripted to fight the war, reliant on technology, and focused on the use of overwhelming force (both firepower and manpower). This method of war tied the American people in with the war, so when the decision to fight was (reluctantly) made or forced on America, we did so as a nation.

Lewis argues that since World War II, the notion of limited war has dominated American military thinking, first as a result of a desire to fight without use of atomic weapons, and now through the use of war as a nation-building tool. While America did raise a large conscript Army to fight Vietnam, the Army's goal wasn't to win the war - the Army's goal was to defend South Vietnam while the Air Force (and Navy, and USMC) tried to win the war technologically by bombing North Vietnam. As a result of Vietnam, the nation ended the draft and adopted the All Volunteer Force. The AVF has led to the rise of a separate military culture and the removal of the American people from the conduct of war, especially post-9/11.

Lewis also blasts the modern American military structure. He argues, convincingly, that the establishment of the Department of Defense, with separate military services, has created a bureaucratic culture where the services are better able to fight for their piece of the military budget than fight to win wars on the battlefield. And, Lewis asserts, Americans have died because of this.

While Lewis's book is full of important observations, it does suffer from some flaws. One is that Lewis, despite using nearly 500 pages to cover his subject, completely skips Grenada and Panama - which is noteworthy because he easily could have fit these into some of his arguments. Also, this book could have used a competent editor: typos abound, extraneous commas make some sentences hard to read, and some passages are just difficult to comprehend. The writing, typos, and commas were so pervasive that it made the book less readable and detracted from the rest of the work - and the only reason this book does not get 5 stars from me.

Although "The American Culture of War" a solid history of the American major military operations since WWII, it is not just a military history -- it is a study of American political and military culture, using history and social sciences to critique the conduct of American warfighting since World War II. Lewis concludes that the nation is too far removed from the warfighting, and "Ultimately, a national, citizen-soldier army is the only guarantee of the security of the nation from external threats, and the only means to ensure that the nation fights just wars." This is an outstanding study that should be read by anyone interested in the modern American military, politics, and foreign policy.

Author Adrian Lewis has crafted an excellent work on the unique aspects of the American profession of arms since WWII. I highly recommend this well written and thoughtfully argued account on the culture, capability and future of our nation's military. Succinctly, The American Culture of War would make a very worthwhile addition to any professional Soldier's library.

About the Author

Rebecca Rogers is Associate Professor of Literacy at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Her research focuses on language, identity, and power in and out of school contexts.  

 
Melissa Mosley is Assistant Professor of Language and Literacy at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on critical literacy learning across the lifespan, particularly how teachers and students together use literacy practices toward social action in and out of the classroom.  

Mary Ann Kramer is Coordinator for Adult Education and Literacy in the St.

Jack Zipes is Professor of German at the University of Minnesota. An acclaimed translator and scholar of children's literature and culture, his most recent books include The Collected Sicilian Folk and Fairy Tales of Giuseppe Pitré, Why Fairy Tales Stick, Hans Christian Andersen: The Misunderstood Storyteller, Beautiful Angiola, and The Robber with the Witch's Head, all published by Routledge.

About the Author

Ute Ritterfeld, Professor for Media Psychology, received her education in the Health Sciences (Academy of Rehabilitation in Heidelberg) and in Psychology (University of Heidelberg), completed her Ph.D. in Psychology (Technical University in Berlin), and habilitated at the University of Magdeburg, Germany. She was Assistant Professor at the University of Magdeburg, Adjunct Professor at the Universities of Berlin (Humboldt) and Hannover, and Associate Professor at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, Annenberg School for Communication. At USC, Ritterfeld directed an interdisciplinary research team devoted to the studies of digital games and hosted the inaugural academic conference on serious games. In 2007, Ritterfeld joined the faculty of Psychology and Education at the VU University Amsterdam and co-founded the Center for Advanced Media Research Amsterdam (CAMeRA@VU) where she serves as director of interdisciplinary research. Ritterfeld co-edits the Journal of Media Psychology published by Hogrefe.

Michael Cody is Professor of Communication at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication. He earned his Ph.D. in Communication at Michigan State University in 1978, where he focused on research methods and face to face social influence processes. He has authored or edited books in persuasion, interpersonal communication and entertainment education. He is the editor of the Journal of Communication (2009-2012).

Peter Vorderer (Ph.D., Technical University of Berlin), is Scientific Director of the Center for Advanced Media Research Amsterdam (CAMeRA) and head of the Department of Communication Science, VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He specializes in media use and media effects research with a special focus on media entertainment and digital games. Together with Dolf Zillmann and Jennings Bryant, he has edited three well-recognized volumes on media entertainment and video games.

Waste Of Time

This information is not all factually correct. When cross-referencing, I found outright falsehoods, despite the lengthy bibliography and index. Readers and students should try to check the entries against the sources to see what is correct. Eg: This book states that an American army nurse dated a German prisoner, yet the source of the story states that the nurse dated an American officer, who had a German POW working for him. If true, this false allegation could have resulted in a court martial. Another entry uses the word "she" when telling about the experience of a male doctor. These examples show careless editing and supervision, which knowledgeable people will find surprising.
I am the author of No Time For Fear, Voices of American Military Nurses in World War II, which is constantly used as a source in this book. Flattered to see so much copied into this book I checked out the references, and was disheartened to think that some of the people mentioned had the record of their important lives changed by this author, and not for the better. It is sad to think that this reference book will carry these inaccuracies for history.

About the Author

Joe R. Feagin is Ella C. McFadden Professor at Texas A & M University. Feagin has done research on racism and sexism issues for forty-five years and has served as the Scholar-in-Residence at the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. He has written 54 scholarly books and nearly 200 scholarly articles in his research areas, and one of his books (Ghetto Revolts) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. His recent books include Systemic Racism (Routledge 2006) and Two Faced Racism: Whites in the Backstage and Frontstage (Routledge 2007). He is the 2006 recipient of a Harvard Alumni Association lifetime achievement award and was the 1999-2000 president of the American Sociological Association.

Joe R. Feagin's The White Racial Frame: Centuries of Racial Framing and Counter-Framing (White Racial Frame) exposes in greater detail the centuries-old racist ideas and practices of people of European descent (i.e., whites) that shaped the racially-segregated, color-coded US society Americans live in today. This work builds on innovative concepts and theoretical frameworks generated in Racist America: Roots, Current Realities, and Future Reparations (2000/2009), Systemic Racism: A Theory of Oppression (2006), as well as other studies of race in Feagin's long list of publications.

Feagin shows that the white racial frame is both a product and producer of whites' brute power and hegemonic dominance over people of color in shaping the modern world (i.e., slavery, colonization, and genocide). The frame might be viewed as the self-perpetuating racially-constructed motor of modernity. Feagin's theoretical understanding of the white racial frame exposes weaknesses in the most widely accepted theories of modernity, which focus on capitalism, state formation, scientific progress and developments of civilization and civil society. Theoretical construction of the white racial frame subsumes these explanations as by-products of whites' long history of exploitation, oppression and destruction of people of color. The frame is the source and foundational structure responsible for triggering the rapid rise of capitalism, states, scientific progress (whites had capital and time for science through living off slave labor and stolen natural resources of people of color) and civilization/civil societies.

As Feagin demonstrates, white wealth generated by capitalist production/consumption, white nation-states, technological advances of the West (i.e., white-controlled societies/states), and comforts and luxuries of "civilization"/"civil society" arise from and are inseparable from the stolen labor and land of people of color and the de-civilization and colonizing process (or white barbarity) targeting non-Westerners, that is, people of color. White Racial Frame makes clear that whites' economic power and social might did not so much come from their hard work, Protestant work ethic and pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps philosophy, nor their proclaimed democratic principals and progressive, liberal social attitudes and behavior. Instead, whites' socio-economic power and Western "civilization" and "civil societies" result from whites' socio-economic disempowerment and barbarous subjugation or extermination of people of color.

Feagin's book presents an uncompromising---somber, but factual---sociological theory of race, race relations and racism in the US, one that does not shy away from the hard truths about the structures and forces that perpetuate whites' (abuse of) power, namely the white racial framing of the social world. Building on a rich black sociological tradition, Feagin provides evidence of whites' abusive, unjustly gained social and economic power, which most social scientists (including sociologists of race) avoid discussing. Like earlier black sociologists such as Anna Julia Cooper, W.E.B. Du Bois and Oliver C. Cox and contemporary black sociologists like Robert Staples, Joyce Ladner and Tukufu Zuberi (to name only a few), Feagin exposes deep-seated mechanisms of white power, honestly and convincingly illustrating whites' age-old racist ideas and practices that maintain the white racial frame of power and privilege.

Joe Feagin is a straight-shooter in racial discourse. White Racial Frame is another sign that Feagin is not afraid to speak truthfully about whites' abuse of power, an intellectual virtue and example of quality scholarship that commands respect from those who teeter on hotly-debated questions concerning whites' role in shaping race, race relations and racism.

About the Author

James L. Furrow, PhD, is Associate Professor and Program Director of the Department of Marriage and Family at the Fuller Graduate School of Psychology. Susan M. The trilogy completed!!

For anyone interested in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, this book is a must read. For those new to EFT, this casebook is an excellent addition to The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy: Creating Connection (Basic Principles Into Practice Series) and The Emotionally Focused Therapist Training Set: Becoming an Emotionally Focused Couple Therapist: The Workbook to complete the trilogy of foundational readings. It is clear that the editors are not only scholars, but also master therapists themselves as each chapter is written with an applied focus intended to help therapists working on the "front lines" of couple therapy. Those new to EFT also may find Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love, written as a self-help book for couples, a useful addition to their library.

While I found the entire casebook to be very useful (my copy is now dog-eared and heavily marked), I found the chapters on the change process (Ch. 3), trauma (Ch. 7), addiction (Ch. 8), infidelity (Ch. 10), culturally diverse couples (Ch. 12), and spirituality (Ch. 14) to particularly enhance my knowledge base as an EFT therapist beyond what has been previously covered in the EFT literature. This is a rich resource that you will consume AND refer back to frequently!

Love over due

Some times we make mistakes. Mine was leaving this book on the shelf for too long unread. EFT is most likely the most important and truly innovative clinical model of the past two decades. Sue Johnson's application of EFT, with a particularly focus on attachment theory, has been nothing less than a small revolution in the field of system family therapies. The model is clear, systematic, pragmatic and yet has the depth of live changing psychotherapy. Johnson and two of her most advanced EFT Colleagues have now put together a case of that demonstrates the application of this model to a wide range of clinical problems. The initial section on foundations of the model, pushes our thinking about how this model works and can be applied. then we are show how this model can be applied to depression, medical disorders, trauma, addiction, sexual issues, and infidelity. These chapters are brilliant and practical. The final section presents applications of this model to diverse populations including gay and lesbian couples, remarriage and cultural diversity in general. This book demonstrates the broad application of the EFT and Couples EFT model to a wide range of clinical challenges. This is a must read, for the EFT trained therapist or some interested in the applications of attachment, emotion and systems therapies in their work or practice.

An excellent introduction to the philosophy of love, sex and marriage

This text has been an invaluable resource used as part of a study as well as for personal interest.

Not only does Raja Halwani provide an excellent introduction to the topics, he also provides realistic scenarios to aid in understanding the analysis. Furthermore, while exploring the philosophy of love, sex and marriage, I found the text a pleasure to read. The author makes good use of humour throughout, preventing some parts from becoming too heavy.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this text. Whether it is for research, study, or personal interest, "Philosophy of Love, Sex, and Marriage: An Introduction", is sure not to disappoint.
