About the Author

Jack Zipes is Professor Emeritus of German and Comparative Literature at the University of Minnesota. This book is supposed to provide an analysis of the history of fairy tales that have been adapted to film. Unfortunately, the author fails miserably. Total waste of time and money. I would pass.

An excellent overview of video game history, critiques, and culture

This is by far the best (and maybe the only?) textbook on video games I have encountered. The chapter on history gave a good overview and didn't bore me; the philosophical and literature reviews were thorough without excess meanderings. The chapter on "serious games" and edutainment was one of the most coherent critiques of the educational games that came out of the behaviorist era that I have ever read (though in my opinion the application of theory in games like math blaster is somewhat misguided; the "rewards" for correct answers are too trivial).

Additionally, the authors themselves had opinions on other literature and game theory. One example that stood out to me was how they critiqued James Gee's book as lacking in an awareness of previous research, which I found accurate. The authors read and summarized books that I had dismissed as tangential and hence, saved me the trouble of reading them (i.e., Hamlet on the Holodeck).Through reading the narrative chapter I realized that the approach I took in my thesis toward analyzing "interactive fiction" was somewhat dated.

Sadly, the edition I read is marred by what appears to be a rush to the printers. Parentheses are left unresolved and words misspelled; a few paragraphs seem untouched by an editor. It is my hope that another addition will rectify these errors and also update the analysis to include more recent trends.

Indispensable resource on vocabulary learning

This book was recommended to me by an English professor whose area of expertise is EFL vocabulary building. If you're an English teacher looking for a book which explains teaching vocabulary to ESL/EFL students in a crystal-clear manner, this is THE book.

A relatively useful text for TESOL/linguistics courses at university level

This book and its companion volume (Teaching ESL/EFL Listening and Speaking) were the core texts of two courses I took for my MA Applied Linguistics. The central tenet of the books is that EFL/ESL classroom learning should consist of equal amounts of the "four strands" of language learning - meaningful input, meaningful output, fluency, and direct attention to language items.

Compared with the other required texts I read while completing my MA, this book is highly pedagogically relevant (ie: some of the suggestions appear to be actually useful for classroom teachers).

The book contains a lot of suggestions for teachers in terms of tasks and activities. It gives a brief description of the research that underpins the suggestions and also suggests further reading material that might prove useful for writing essays and assignments at university level.

Having said that, I have found that I've used very few of the suggestions in my job as an EFL teacher at a South Korean elementary school. The reason is that the book focuses on specific tasks and activities, rather than explaining how to develop lesson plans that incorporate those tasks/activities. In other words, the book has a narrow focus.

I think this is an excellent book for academic courses and teachers who want some ideas for activities, but somewhat less useful for teachers seeking an overall guide to effective EFL/ESL teaching.

This book gets it done. . .

I can't agree more with the previous reviewer. This book is by far the best I've read on the subject--highly informed, highly practical, research-based, and comprehensive. If you're in doubt about whether to buy it, take a moment to look through the table of contents and the excerpts! After reading this book at a library, I can't imagine *not* buying a copy for my classroom.

About the Author

Neal A. Lester is Professor and Chair of the Department of English at Arizona State University; he specializes in African American literary and cultural studies. He is the author of Ntozake Shange: A Critical Study of the Plays (1995) and Understanding Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God: A Student Casebook to Issues, Sources, and Historical Documents (1999), and he has published on and taught courses in African American children's literature, African American drama, African American folklore, African American images in American cinema, and black/white interracial intimacies in American culture.

About the Author

Robert F. Potter (Ph.D. Indiana University) is Associate Professor of Telecommunications at Indiana University, Bloomington. He is a member of Core Faculty-Cognitive Science Program and Director of the Institute for Communication Research. His research focuses on the impact of auditory elements on information processing of media, psychophysiological measures as indicators of cognitive and emotional responses to media, and the concept of advertising clutter and its influence on information processing. Paul D. Bolls (Ph.D. Indiana University) is co-director of the PRIME Lab and an associate professor of strategic communication at the Missouri School of Journalism. He conducts media psychophysiology research with a specific focus on examining mental processing of public health messages. He has been involved in building and running media psychophysiology labs for the past 15 years, having worked in labs at Indiana University, University of Missouri, and Washington State University.

Excellent! This book provides good theoretical overviews yet practical and easy to read.

I have several books and articles on Psychophysiology because of my new research projects.
This was the best book. If you need to jump start without getting too overwhelmed, you should definitely consider this one. I would highly recommend anyone interested in psychophysiology measures for any context.
