"In Good Enough Endings, Jill Salberg has given us a treasure. Psychoanalyses have to end. This has always been understood and more or less accepted by both patients and analysts. What rarely has been acknowledged openly is that the same logic cannot easily be applied to understanding why the ending of the personal relationship is so difficult for a patient to accept (work through) as simply a reasonable part of what is lost when the professional relationship 'terminates.' Transference explanations notwithstanding, this thorn in the side of psychoanalytic theory has never been systematically explored in a single volume from a perspective that fully respects psychoanalytic treatment in its personal as well as professional aspects. Jill Salberg, Ph.D., is an adjunct clinical associate professor at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis and a member of the faculty at the Stephen A. Mitchell Center for Relational Psychoanalysis. In addition, she is on the faculty of the National Institute for the Psychotherapies and a training supervisor at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy. She has published articles in Psychoanalytic Dialogues and Studies in Gender and Sexuality and has contributed chapters to The Jewish World of Sigmund Freud and Answering a Question with a Question: Judaism and Contemporary Psychoanalysis.

New perspectives on termination

The infant uses the secure base to venture out into the world and explore. It returns when hungry or hurt, when in need of nurturance. Sometimes a look back brings enough connection that a complete return is not needed. But it also returns to play, and to share joy and accomplishment with the mother. Ideally, as the child grows, the attachment does not fade, but the way these basic needs (dependence and autonomy) are met does undergo change. What do these attachment ideas mean for modern therapy? Is the traditional practice of hard-and-fast termination in line with attachment principles, or does it warrant an upgrade? What does connection over time look like for a "good enough" therapeutic relationship? This books begins to scratch the surface. The chapters are thought-provoking but I think the book questions tradition more than it offers new approaches, which left me wanting more. 4/5

Since publishing Don't Bet on the Prince a decade ago, Zipes has established himself as the preeminent popularizer of the social and psychological uses of fairy tales for a contemporary audience. The 11 essays collected here are revised and updated introductions and afterwords written by Zipes for his books dealing with fairy and folk literature. His aim in updating and reissuing this material is to highlight the historical role that fairy tales, both oral and written, play in socializing and civilizing their audience. Backed by scholarly research and cross-cultural references, the essays describe how a privileged, educated minority has used fairy tales to defend and maintain its status while incorporating and perpetuating the belief that the poor could triumph over the ruling class through cunning and moral integrity. Zipes's main thesis is that fairy tales are a dynamic mixture of upper- and lower-class values that at once reinforce a society's class structure and, with subtlety and humor, show the emperor's nakedness without upsetting the status quo. The chapters on fairy tale creators Hans Christian Andersen, Oscar Wilde, Herman Hesse and Americans Frank Stockton and L. Frank Baum connect these writers' outsider status with their use of the fairy tale to explore nonconformism and to voice their opposition to hypocrisy, commercialism and war. Of primary interest to students of children's literature, the book may also appeal to readers concerned with social history, although the links between these disparate pieces are not as solidly forged as they might have been had Zipes written a single cohesive study of the subject.

The result is a concise yet comprehensive picture of the genres development in Western Europe and America since the 1600s. Fairy tales thrived as an oral tradition for centuries before they were transcribed. Zipes argues that early tales didnt target a juvenile audience; instead, their allegorical form often concealed social, moral, ethical, and aesthetic criticism appreciated only by adults. The pioneer of the genre in France was Charles Perrault, who created fairy tales drawing on pagan beliefs and folklore, rather than on antique sources, as the classicist canon of his time preferred. In Germany, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm charged their tales with Protestant ethics, while Hans Christian Andersen negotiated power relations and social domination in Danish society. Due to religious austerity, fairy tales were suppressed in England until the middle of the 19th century. After they entered literature officially during the Victorian Age, they exhibited a strong didactic tendency, and eventually took shape as an implicit critical inquiry into the dominant materialist culture, the oppressive moral code, or, as in the case of Oscar Wilde, normative sexuality. Among American fairy tale writers, Zipes focuses particularly on Frank Baum, whose multivolume work on the utopian land of Oz became a fixture of the cultural landscape, embodying the author's dream of a socialist alternative to American capitalism. Zipes skillfully weaves into his narrative the story of the influence of the Arabian Nights, translations of which began to appear in the West as early as the 1700s. At the close of his study, he also looks briefly at how the 20th-century German novelist Hermann Hesse infused the classical fairy tale with the macabre and romantic realism to reflect his personal journey and European political conflicts. Helpful compilation of Zipes' works

This book is a collection of introductions and essays from previous books Zipes has published, usually his collections of fairytales. The texts have been somewhat reworked and it is great to have them all gathered into one place for reading. Since this is a smaller volume, it is easier to carry around than his Grimms, Beauty and the Beast, Aesop's Fables, etc. when you just need to read the scholarly works and not the primary texts of the tales. Zipes has made great contributions to this field and this volume serves as a reminder of the breadth of his work.

Interesting, shame about the proof-reading

Zipes is always interesting, thought provoking and he knows a lot, though his essays always seem to promise more than they deliver. These essays range widely across the field of his interests. Having said that, i wish someone had done a better job of proof-reading the book. The essay on the French fairy tale, in itself a fascinating and informative piece of work, is spoilt by the bizzarre dating. If Louis 14 died in 1715, how could he be waging war in 1788? On one page you read that Madame D'Aulnoy published four volumes of fairy tales between 1697 and 1698, on the next page you read that she wrote her first fairy tales in 1790. If you're trying to use the information for study purposes it's frustrating and makes you wonder how reliable the other facts in the book are. End of grumble. If you're looking for a good, readable introduction to the study of folk and fairy tales, this is a good place to start.

Horrible Horrible Horrible Layout....

This book may have some good qualities but because it is so poorly organized and confusing if they do actually exist they are probably hidden away in an appendix at the end. If you love love love statistics and are dedicated to advancing your knowledge you may learn something but you can count on extreme frustration. If you only using this book because you are required to use it, consider dropping the class. I have never felt the need to punch a book out of anger before but after 4 weeks with this book the cover looks like a side of beef in Rocky. This book requires so much flipping around between appendices, equations, and screen shots because tables, charts, images are all placed at the end of a book. So what if a chart is referenced in each sentence, it needs to be placed at the end of the book... but there no page numbers to guide you, and the screen shots that are included in text aren't labeled but are referenced as labeled in the text just to solidify that you have no idea what is going on. Add to that the review questions, review exercises, chapter exercises, course exercises and you will be so confused by what you are supposed to do you won't have to worry about not understanding the difficult concepts of regression.

Hilary Janks crosses
cultural boundaries to reach educators in both Africa and America with her thoughts about critical literacy. She challenged me to think about more ways to develop critical literacy with my students. Because our world evolves around linear, concrete thinking it doesn't provoke reflection and thought. Hilary entices us to think more deeply about our world and the roles we play in protecting it for future generations.

5 Stars for Content, 1 Star for Publisher Restrictions

This is an excellent book on the philosophy of perception. I was looking for a book to round out my understanding of the relevant theories in the field. A prominent philosopher had suggested this book on a forum and it absolutely met my needs. While Fish advocates a particular viewpoint in his other works, he did an excellent job of keeping that bias out of this work. Since the book is billed as an "introduction", this is exactly what you should demand out of the author.

Unfortunately, this was also the first book I've ever read on my Kindle where I was unable to extract all the highlights I marked. I consider the automatic extraction of notes and highlights the biggest advantage of digital delivery. If I wanted to manually type my highlights, I could buy a physical copy (put it on my shelves, lend it to others, resell it, etc.).

To be honest, I wanted to give the Kindle Edition 2 stars as a result of the publisher restrictions. However, there are (at this time) no other reviews and I felt that a 2 star rating would be horribly unfair to the author (since it would show up that way on search pages). However, I have subtracted one star for the inferior experience and encourage the author to use a different publishing house in the future.
